Internships can provide valuable opportunities to learn more about a particular career path, grow your network and gain resume-bolstering experience that can prepare you for your full-time career later on.
It is important to know how to ask about internships so you can find one that is a good fit for you. Reaching out to companies requires tact, careful research and planning, but doing so can help you find worthwhile opportunities as an intern.
What should I do if I do not want any of the school-sourced internships and instead I want to apply for an internship on my own?
INTEREST
Identify internships that match your interests and career goals.
Research various industries to find companies aligned with your goals.
Seek opportunities by asking family, friends, or acquaintances, or by exploring local businesses in your area.
RESEARCH
Investigate the company’s internship application process and timing.
If no contact exists, consider sending a cold email to inquire about internships.
Look for contact details on the company’s website, such as a general email or specific staff contact.
DECIDE ON DESIRED OUTCOMES
Determine what you want to gain from the internship.
Assess factors like corporate culture, personal interests, and commitment.
Ensure the internship aligns with your personal and career goals.
CONTACT THE COMPANY & APPLY
Reach out to the company to request information about their internships.
Use email for initial contact; proofread for grammatical and spelling errors to make a good impression.
Follow the company’s application process closely, and consider including a cover letter or CV.
Always use your students.edu.sg email for internship applications.
FOLLOW-UP
After applying, allow at least a week before following up if there’s no response. Check your inbox and spam folders for replies.
Follow up politely, showing enthusiasm for the opportunity.
If selected for an interview (Zoom or in-person), prepare thoroughly and comply with all requests. Make an appointment with Mr Daryl Lim (our ECG counsellor) to learn how to prepare for internship interviews.
Once selected, adhere to the organisation’s rules, and keep detailed notes for your ECG Portfolio reflections.
