๐Ÿšข Visit with me: Cambodia!

Join Mr Ong as he shares his trip to Angkor Wat in Cambodia and what he learnt from the visit!

Instructions

Step 1 : Read Mr Ong's sharing below!

I had been to Angkor Wat once and this view of the temple together with the reflection pond is one of the best views of any building that I had ever seen.

It is a very large site with other smaller buildings for tourists to explore. The kings in the past built the temples of Gods they believed in, and this temple was for the royal families to become one with the God. It was originally a Hindu temple built by King Suryavarman II from 1122 โ€“ 1150 over a period of 28 years. After he died, the country went into conflict and another new king introduced Buddhism to the country instead. Angkor Wat was thus converted to a Buddhist temple. The temple was neglected since then but never completed abandoned. Through the years, there were records of people visiting, doing religious practices and rediscovering the temple.

Cambodia gained independence from France on 9 November 1953 and began restoration of Angkor Wat. The restoration was however interrupted by Cambodian Civil War and Khmer Rouge control of the country during the 1970s and 1980s. Far more damage was done to Angkor Wat after the wars, by art thieves working out of Thailand, which, in the late 1980s and early 1990s, claimed almost every head that could be lopped off the structures, including reconstructions.

The temple is a powerful symbol of Cambodia and is a source of great national pride. The temple is so significant that it is on the Cambodian national flag!
