Conceptualised by National Junior College in 2017, the International Humanities Symposium (IHS) is an annual international event that brings together gifted students from around the world to learn, collaborate and innovate in the Humanities. The symposium serves to showcase the achievements of students through their research efforts in the various disciplines of the Humanities, providing an authentic backdrop for students to appreciate the various perspectives that help to deepen their understanding of global issues and contexts.
This year, the symposium provides a platform for participants to enhance their understanding of the issues surrounding sustainable development from inter-disciplinary Humanities perspectives, as well as share insights they have gained from their own research. Through research presentations and the exchange of ideas and perspectives, peers from different countries, cultures and disciplines will better appreciate the diverse notions of sustainability. At the same time, participants will negotiate the various contexts that affect the issues and solutions necessary in achieving sustainable development. The cross-disciplinary Humanities discussions will enable participants to raise their global awareness, becoming more informed and critical citizens.
Sustainable Development Goals present a blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all. They address the global challenges we face, including those related to poverty, inequality, climate change, environmental degradation, peace and justice. The Humanities, encompassing diverse fields of disciplinary thought, plays a pivotal role in highlighting the various socio-economic, cultural, historical and political contexts and complexities in addressing these challenges, utilising lessons and insights from the past to promote positive change that can bring us one step closer towards this ideal.
