Common FAQ

1. What happens when Parents select ‘no’ in the consent form ‘Consent to use MOE’s Centralised ICT Systems’ emailed to schools earlier?

Students who do not have Student iCON will not be able to access Zoom, MS Pro Plus and various Google apps such as Google Classroom and Drive, which will be available under Student iCON. It should be noted that the MS Pro Plus account would be needed for the students to use Microsoft applications such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint in SSOE 2 devices such as in computer labs. The Student iCON ID (e.g., Jon_Tan@students.edu.sg) will still be created for access to other MOE apps for students in the future.

2. What is the naming convention for Student iCON email address?

a. The student’s email address will be based on <Full Name>@students.edu.sg.

b. Any space in the full name will be replaced with an underscore.

c. Should the student’s full name have words such as “Bte” and “s/o”, they will not appear in the email address.

d. The full name is limited to the first 4 words as given in their NRIC/FIN to keep the length of the email address manageable.

e. For cases where students share the same full name, we have added a numerical number (e.g. Jon_Tan_1, Jon_Tan_2) to differentiate their email addresses.

3. How can my child log in to Student iCON?

Student iCON is web-based. Students can use their web browser in their internet-enabled computing or mobile devices to visit https://workspace.google.com/dashboard to access Student iCON.

You can refer to the following table for guidance on the Operating System/browser which students can use to log in.

5. How will students access these apps?

After providing the consent in using the MOE Centralised System, the students will be provided an email account, which can be used to log in to the Student iCONS account, and use the same user id to access apps such as Google Classroom. Google classroom can be use via an application on a mobile or a web browser on a computer.

In Primary schools, the applications are mostly used in school and in an event of HBL, it can be used at home. If a device is needed to support your child during HBL, do let the form teachers know. They will be on the PDLP (Personalised Digital Learning Programme) in Secondary schools

6. Who will pay for Microsoft PRO licenses required to access these apps?

The students will not need to purchase the Microsoft Pro licenses to be able to access free apps such as student iCON, Zoom and Google Classroom.

It should be noted that the MS Pro Plus account would be needed for the students to use Microsoft applications such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

7. How do we ensure that my child's passwords are safe?

In school, we go through cyber wellness education with regard to passwords and cyber security. We have taken into consideration the security of the passwords and hence we highly encourage parents to assist your child in the logging in process and also to follow the MOE guidelines in setting a secured password.

8. Has the school considered excessive screen time?

During HBL, the teachers will follow the recommended screen time which are included in the HBL guidelines.

9. What is so unique about the student iCON site and how is it different from SLS?

There are different advantages in using these 2 platforms to help the students to learn

Student Learning Space

The Student Learning Space (SLS) is an online learning environment for all students and teachers:

· SLS contains a repository of curriculum-aligned learning resources, created and curated by MOE, accessible by all students;

· Lessons and quizzes are available to support students’ learning and will incorporate the above-mentioned resources in lesson designs and assignments. Teachers can monitor the learning progress of the assignments (with detailed analysis) and provide feedback.

Google Classroom

· Leverage the affordance of G Suites (gmail, Docs, Sheets, etc)

· Teachers can create classes, distribute assignments, and provide feedback.

- The learning materials uploaded will be saved in the Google Drive for students to access

- Students will be able to collaborate with their classmates in creating different projects such as composition writing for English lesson, research on different topics for Science using apps such as Google Slides, Google Doc. In addition, the students portfolio can be organised neatly in Google Drive.

- This will be a common student platform for all MOE Central systems and can be utilised by students from Primary Schools to Junior Colleges / Millennia Institute.

- With the student iCON, the student has their personalized account and with that, the teacher can then increase the security of Zoom calls with your child by turning on the 'authorized user only' function where they need a registered Zoom account.
