GIS Resource Bank

Please note this is an interim resource bank as we continue with the consolidation of curriculum-aligned GIS resources for the Geography fraternity.

A note from the CPDD GIS NLC Team (2017-2019):

  • Our team started with a pioneering batch of teachers who signed up from the AST Geography Chapter and initially explore a range of geospatial tools for teaching Geography in 2017. In 2018, we focused on ArcGIS Online as the key tool to help another batch of teachers become familiar with just one system and streamline the provision of resources. Subsequently, the Geography Unit was able to get ArcGIS Online accounts not just for this NLC, but also provision for each school in the second half of 2018.
  • In 2019, we aim to increase the types of GIS infused lesson types by differentiating the learning experiences of teacher participants new to GIS and also returning participants who will work on field-based GIS lesson materials.
  • Authoritative types of resources are time-intensive to create, and to a large extent, limited in terms of time-sensitivity, unless there are APIs powering the data. For such maps, please find them in the Singapore Student Learning Space (SLS). Even so, the represented reality originally intended by the creator would change over time, which is why Geography Unit officers looking after map lessons on SLS will always have this job task. It is therefore not the purpose of this GIS Resource Bank to provide authoritative types of digital maps. As map creators ourselves who want to pass on the passion for digital map-making, we hope teachers can build up their skills in breaking down how they want to use/modify the maps for their classrooms.
  • We believe in a constructivist approach to using maps for this GIS Resource Bank and are archiving the learning efforts of the teachers who have joined us for this learning journey using this GIS Resource Bank from 2017 to 2019. As such, the resources are meant for teachers to modify into something for their own classroom use and inspire teachers to start their own learning journeys in using GIS, self-directed or in your own communities. We hope to see more of our Geography fraternity use GIS to engage our students and also understand why we are using specific geospatial tools like ArcGIS Online or Google Earth to teach. A simple start for now; when we create more blended learning for our students using geospatial educational technologies, we are preparing them for a digitalized workplace in their near futures.
  • Do look out for iterations of other GIS or geospatial technologies NLCs that are anchored by ETD, CPDD and AST in the near future. To find out more about GIS NLCs, feel free to email the Geography Unit at moe_cpdd_sec_geog@moe.edu.sg or moe_cpdd_preu_geog@moe.edu.sg.
  • To find out how to get a school-based ArcGIS Online account, please email Josef_Tan@moe.gov.sg.

How would success look like for a GIS Geography lesson?

(video coming soon!)

Briefly:

  1. Students are exposed to digital interactive maps as visual classroom aids
  2. Students understand what is georeferenced data
  3. Teacher is able to deploy GIS infused learning tasks, and rationalise its use in classroom Geography using the SAMR framework
