Day 3: A Journey of Inspiration and Action!ย
Rahajeng Wengi (Good evening) from Bali! ๐ย
Today marks Day 3 of our OLJ, and what a fulfilling day it has been! We started our morning with a hearty breakfast to fuel up for an exciting lineup of activities focused on sustainability and conservation.
Our first visit was to Eco Bali Recycling โป๏ธ, a private waste minimisation company. We were warmly welcomed by the energetic and inspiring Mr Abdillah, who gave us a fascinating presentation on their mission towards achieving zero waste in Bali.We then toured their Material Recovery Facilities, where we observed how recyclables are sorted, cleaned, crushed, and compacted. Witnessing these behind-the-scenes processes made us appreciate the hard work that goes into managing waste responsibly. The experience left us deeply inspired and respectful of their dedication to protecting the environment.
Next, we headed to the Turtle Conservation and Education Centre ๐ขon Serangan Island. Here, we had the rare opportunity to see both young and adult sea turtles up close โ some of which are not found in Singapore! We learned about the threats these majestic creatures face, especially from plastic pollution. This eye-opening visit strengthened our commitment to reducing single-use plastics. The work done by this non-profit organisation is truly admirable, and we left feeling motivated to do our part in marine conservation.
Our last destination was Serangan Plastic Waste Recycle, a plastic recycling and upcycling centre founded by a former diver passionate about stopping coral bleaching at its source. . Here, we got hands-on with the recycling process โ from washing and sorting, to crushing, melting, and finally compacting plastic waste into new items. We were amazed by the creativity of the Balinese people, who turn everyday plastic waste into beautiful and practical items like hats, pouches, lanyards, furniture, and even intricate art pieces! It was a fun and meaningful experience that showed us the power of innovation in sustainability.
We ended this enriching day with a delicious steamboat buffet dinner, complete with free-flow ice cream โ a perfect treat to celebrate our journey so far! We were also surprised and delighted to receive certificates of participation, local snacks, keychains, and tote bags, kindly gifted by our generous hosts and teachers. As we prepare to return to Singapore tomorrow, our hearts are full โ not just with memories, but with a renewed sense of purpose. This journey may be ending, but our commitment to sustainability is just beginning. We promise to take what weโve learned here and live greener, more mindful lives โ and to encourage others to do the same! Remember, being kind to the environment today creates a better future for everyone tomorrow! ๐
