About Penang

Penang is a state in Malaysia, located on the northwest coast of Peninsular Malaysia. It consists of Penang Island and the neighbouring Seberang Perai on the mainland. Penang is known for its rich history, diverse culture, and famous street food. Some popular attractions in Penang include George Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Penang Hill, Kek Lok Si Temple, Batu Ferringhi Beach, and the Clan Jetties. Penang is also home to several festivals and events throughout the year, such as the George Town Festival, Thaipusam, and Chinese New Year.

George Town

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, George Town has an abundance of churches and temples, pre-war architecture, and a lively street arts and culture scene. 

Kek Lok Si Temple

Over a hundred years old and the largest Buddhist temple in Malaysia, Kek Lok Si is home to over 10,000 Buddha statues, and a 37-meter-tall bronze sculpture of Kuan Yin, the Buddhist Goddess of compassion. The temple is considered a main pilgrimage destination, and it attracts visitors from all over Southeast Asia. 

Penang National Park

Penang National Park might be one of the smallest in the world at just 23 square kilometers, but it still contains five very distinct habitats with over 400 different plant species. In addition to forests and mangroves, there is also a long stretch of seacoast here with timber trees lining up the white powdery sand and coastal habitat. 

Penang Hill

Penang Hill (known in Malay as “Bukit Bendera”, or Flag Hill) is an imposing 833-meter-high hill and one of the unmissable things to go in Penang. Developed by the British colonial powers as the very first Hill Station in Malaysia in 1787 . Penang Hill is not just the green lung of Penang but also boasts heritage buildings and breathtaking scenery.

Entopia by Penang Butterfly Farm

Entopia is Penang's new butterfly farm, a massive glass conservatory where over 15,000 free-flying butterflies live among waterfalls, lush tropical greenery, and re-created natural features.

CLAN JETTIES

The Clan jetties are Chinese floating villages dating back to the 19th century. These neighbourhoods used to welcome immigrants from China who gathered by clan to help each other. Several of these jetties are still inhabited today by the descendants of these different clans.
