"Reflecting on the infodemic"
A digital workshop proposal for high-schoolers (14-18 years)
in formal and informal educational settings in Turkey
*with anytime and realtime learning elements
Inquiry question: How can high-schoolers in Turkey critically reflect on the infodemic and Covid-19 & health-related misinformation online?
Inspire (Anytime)
“We’re not just fighting an epidemic; we’re fighting an infodemic. Fake news spreads faster and more easily than this coronavirus and is just as dangerous,” said Director-General of the World Health Organisation Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, 2020.
Read the article "Health vs Hoax" from the Data Detox Kit (on the right) and reflect on the quotation above. (Share your reflections on Jamboard)
Connect (Realtime)
Think about some of the Covid-19 and health-related misinformation you have encountered during the pandemic and discuss:
What was it?
Where did you see it?
Who might be affected by it?
When might this cause a problem?
Why does it amplify the infodemic?
How does it relate to the health misinformation spectrum? (low-medium-high harm)
Use the guideline I prepared (on the left) to guide you in your small groups.
Share (Realtime)
WH- questions are extremely helpful to begin evaluating a piece of information. Can you formulate more WH- questions that every internet user can pose when they encounter similar health misinformation?
Use the Critical Thinking Cheatsheet (on the right) to help you formate inspiring questions.
Pick up the one that most strikes/inspires you and turn the message behind that question into a meme with a Meme Generator! Remember memes are great to spread awareness on crucial topics. (Share what you have created on Padlet)
Engage (Anytime)
Remember! Critical thinking is most effective when it becomes a reflex, so practice, reflect and apply what you have learned to your everyday online (and offline!) life.
Digging deeper: Look at some of the wonderful resources (Turkish and English) you may find on the Padlet library I created (on the left). It includes a range of different formats; from podcasts, videos, articles to games, and useful links!
Feel free to add your own, share what you think, and interact with others' comments.
