HOW CAN WE ENCOURAGE STUDENTS TO CRITICALLY REFLECT ON THE DANGERS OF SOCIAL MEDIA?
The project presented on this page outlines the necessity to deal with the topic of cyberbullying in an educational setting, following a recent case of bullying involving Marcus Rashford as part of the European Soccer Championship (EM 2020).
It presents the starting point for a resource collection that is based on four different exercises (combining AT and RT elements) that will be outlined in the following.
The idea is to extend this resource collection over time, so colleagues can turn to this page for input when addressing the topic of cyberbullying in the classroom.
Students will be familiarized with the concept of cyberbullying and the different tasks outlined on this page.
More details can be found in the input presentation and the inquiry plan.
Students will be asked to collect information on cyberbullying, e.g., definitions, forms, statistics, news articles, etc. online and create an online collection of resources.
The collection of results can be retrieved from padlet.*
*Note: It could be complemented by Google Jamboard for selected aspects
Students will be asked to review some potential cyberbullying scenarios.
They will be asked judge whether the six scenarios qualify as cyberbullying and - if yes - they will be asked to judged if they are punishable by (Austrian) law.
Students will be asked to watch the German documentary SETZE EIN ZEICHEN as an interactive presentation via nearpod!
The film offers an insight into what can happen through cyberbullying and how those affected are doing. Michaela Horn, the mother of a victim of cyberbullying, tells the story of her son Joel, who took his own life at the end of his ordeal when he could no longer bear the pressure and humiliation he was exposed to through cyberbullying. The law on cyberbullying, which has been in force since January 1, 2016, is presented in the film together with ways of seeking help.Afterwards, they will be asked to map out the story of Joel via popplet.
Students will be asked to read a recent German newspaper article titled Im Digitalen Aus. Afterwards, they will be asked to gather into groups and record brief answers to one of four topics discussed in the article via flipgrid
For their final task, students will be asked to research tips on how to stop bullying, as well as compose a collection of useful material and guidelines for parents and teachers, who play a core role in educating children and teenagers on cyberbullying. Moreover, students will be asked to also gather expert voices and bullying stories.
The Resource Collection can be found on Padlet
