The second part of the Read.Inquire.Write. process is where we provide background knowledge for the students. Technically this falls into the "Orient to Content" part of the cycle, but we have separated to simplify this walk-through.
Read through the task and then explore the items listed below.
Slides -- slides 8-23
Teacher Guide -- pages 16-18
Student Guide -- page 2-3
Social Studies Practices -- pages 100-101 (Grade 8 Practices)
Create a document in your personal folder and title it Section 4: Building Background - [your last name, your district].
(Example: Section 4: Building Background - Cornue, MO BOCES)
In the document you created, reflect on the following:
Why build background? How do we find the balance between "building background" and telling the students everything (giving away the investigation part of this process)?
What do you like about the structure RIW uses? What would you change, if anything?
Are there other "Key Terms" that you might add? How might you organize your students to complete this section?
What scaffolding might need to be done to support some of the students?
At the end of this activity there is a day one Exit Ticket (page 29 of the student packet). This means that "Orient to Content" and "Building Background" are supposed to be completed in one class period. Does this seem reasonable? If not, how long might it take? Would it take less time once the students have been through this process a few times?
Remember: Answer some of the questions or all of them. Add thoughts of your own.
Think of these tasks as a running professional journal.
