At Blacksburg Middle School, Mr. Harry Farmer leads Sixth Grade Band, Seventh Grade Band, and Symphonic Band for eighth graders. Fifth graders typically pick new instruments in the spring before starting sixth grade, but any student is welcome to join band, whether or not they have musical experience.
All bands perform in at least two concerts a year, and Seventh Grade Band and Symphonic Band typically participate in one or more competitions. Field trips to perform at farther-away destinations are standard too.
Eighth graders are also eligible to join Blacksburg High School Marching Band if they desire.
