The four core classes are math, ELA (English Language Arts), Science, and Social Studies. When our core times run back-to-back, we will build in time at the end of one class before the start of the next for a moving transition. Students will be expected to get their body Ready for the next class, get Set with needed materials), and if they have efficiently done both of these, can Go outside or along the hallway circuit for a couple minutes of movement before class starts.
Circle of Power and Respect
CPR is when students on Team Summit meet together in small groups to greet each other, share conversation, and do an activity (often playing a game) together. This is an important part of our community building time.
At BRMS, we aim to build a cohesive, equitable school community for all students. One way we are going to work on this mission is to meet in small advisory groups, known as Nests, once a week. All Summit students will be given a Nest advisor who they will be with for their 4 years at Browns River. This consistency provides an opportunity for folks to build lasting relationships, beyond their academic team, over time.
Students in grade 5 & 6 have PE twice a week, World Language (studying both Spanish or French Culture at some point throughout the year) once a week, and general music once a week. General music is a required class, unlike chorus and strings (or band in grade 6) which are optional.
EXP is short for EXPloratories! Our EXPs are offered to students in quarters. They will each experience the following EXP classes across their year:
Art
Design Technology
Guidance/Library
Health
All students will attend library classes two out of their three EXPs per week during their guidance/library rotation and guidance the other time. You'll notice there is also a Lib noted on Mondays. Lib is short for library; this shorter weekly block is when students will hear book talks, check out books for required reading assignments, and relax & read.
Chorus and strings are optional music opportunities offered to 5th graders at our school; band is an additional option offered in grade 6. Students who do not opt to join the BRMuSic program will remain on team for additional study opportunities during rehearsal times.
Twice a week, our Summit teaching team is joined by our math and literacy specialists to CONNECT with students in small groups to further learning progress. CONNECT groupings are dynamic, changing daily or after a period of weeks based on individual student goals and/or indications from class that there is something to work on.
We build in these blocks in our schedule to assure that EVERY Summit student has the opportunity to make the connections they need, when they need it.
Team Time is an important part of our week on Team Summit. This is a time when we will make team announcements, share celebrations, facilitate conversation about how things are going (and problem solve together when needed). At its core, this is our time to build our community through team building activities, comradery, and fun!
