Two-Year Professional Learning (~ 15 hours of virtual learning each year). This experience is designed to help teachers deeply understand and effectively implement the PeBLES2 curriculum. Through approximately 15 hours of virtual learning spread across three months, teachers engage with the curriculum both as learners and educators. Below are our professional learning presentations with embedded videos and the adaptation tool. Teachers participate in "immersion" activities, where they experience the curriculum as learners, engage in peer discussions, and collaborate with colleagues to prepare for and reflect on their teaching. They also learn strategies to foster meaningful student-to-student discussions that deepen sensemaking and understanding.
This approach helps teachers understand the curriculum's purpose and structure while building their capacity to facilitate and design adaptations for place-based, phenomenon-driven learning that connects to students' lives and communities.
Year 1: Two-day Workshop (4hrs each day), Roundtable 1, 2, 3, 4 (3hrs each roundtable), including breaks
Year 2: Two-day Workshop (4hrs each day), Roundtable 1, 2-3, 4 (3hrs each roundtable), including breaks
(W) Introduction to scientific sensemaking and phenomenon adaptation, Lesson 0 and 1 immersion.
(R1) Focus on productive talk in the classroom and prep for Lesson 1 - read Talk Science Primer below.
(R2) DQB, modeling, and productive talk group share. Introduction to related phenomena chart and design adaptations.
(R3) Research behind the pedagogy. Group readings and discussion. Read four articles below.
(R4) Reflection from unit experience. Teachers as designers for year 2.
(W) Re-orient with unit. Prepare to make adaptations by reviewing library of phenomena, learn about approaches to adapt, and explore the adaptation tool.
(R1) Introduce adaptation pathways. Teachers work on their adaptations.
(R2-3) Same roundtable for 2 and 3. Teachers present one tuning protocol to share and get feedback on their planned and enacted adaptation.
(R4) Teachers polish their adaptations, showcase their adaptations, and celebrate their two-year work together.
