Conical Pendulum
Conical Pendulum
Analyse forces involved in horizontal and vertical circular motion under the influence of two or more forces.
Use the animation at the link above to investigate the features of a conical pendulum.
What happens when you increase/decrease the radius?
What are the forces acting? What is providing the centripetal force and how do you calculate this?
This diagram shows the forces acting on the pendulum;
Since there is no Vertical motion the vertical forces are balanced i.e the vertical component of the Tension force is equal and opposite to the weight force.
Tf cos⍬ = mg
The ‘horizontal component’ of the tension force provides the Centripetal Force
Fc= Tf sin ⍬
(mv2/r = Tf sin ⍬)
