OK, I had to add this little picture - as this is an example of what doesn't generally work. There simply is not a way to 'learn' information without interacting with it. Truly, I'm not certain I would want someone to simply install the information from all my classes into my mind - as I would be missing out on the experience.
Rather, a person must work with (or as I often say 'play with') the materials and concepts of any course to learn them. That said, we learn by making mistakes or failing - and that is OK for it gives us new information to work with. B.F. Skinner states it this way "A failure is not always a mistake, it may simply be the best one can do under the circumstances. The real mistake is to stop trying."
OK, I am hoping that every student takes the opportunity to earn the Best Try-er Award. To get this prestigious award, one must challenge themselves to give their very best. Often, this will require following the mantra in the poster to the right. That is, we might not know things yet, and we are often going to make mistakes, but our actions will hopefully get us closer to our goals one step at a time!!! Will you take the challenge?
As a teacher - I desire to create opportunities for students to showcase their personalized thinking and understanding through unique questions and challenges.
For students - I desire each one to be challenged to utilize their knowledge and understanding to showcase their abilities in unique questions and challenges.
Although we may practice traditional skills (much as an athlete practices skills for a sport or a baker for decorations), the true measure of ones skills comes from the ability to combine multiple skills and understandings into final products.
I utilize this picture as a reminder that we all need to practice growth. As stated above, we all have the opportunity to try some new things in our teaching and learning in the coming weeks. I would certainly like to believe we will all come out of this having grown and realizing some new strengths that we can share with others.
Please share any learning experiences you have with others in your classes as well as the general public. In the end, this is our time to shine as one. Best wishes!
Ultimately, a grades are determined by completing & correcting 🧠🔵 Independent Practice (40%) & 📈🖼️Assessments (60%) . We will often utilize KAMI to score & provide tips/insights on improving a students' work. Alas, students are welcome to complete work on their own paper and attach to the bottom of the KAMI document in Google Classroom.
Students are expected to work on Independent Practice Assignments during the class period. Failure to comply will result in students' self imposing themselves homework.
Students are expected to complete and correct every assignment to the best of his/her ability. In general, Independent Practice is collected for 3 weeks from it being assigned.
I will provide students with individualized suggestions and tips through KAMI. Students can utilize comments to make corrections and resubmit their work for up to full credit!!!
Other in-class practice activities and ✍️🔵 notes will be completed in KAMI or through the use of 💪🟩DESMOS/Amplify, 💪🎟️Wayground or Kahoot!; 💪🔵 Kami or another PDF editor; or other online platforms. As we get to these resources, more information on their use will be provided. Alas, the belief is that some of you have already used them and can be counted on to be the experts that classmates could count upon for tips and help. Ultimately, ungraded practice and notes are meant for student growth (much as going to the weight room for athletes) and are personalized by the student's themselves as some will use as learning while we are going through the lesson and others will use it as review before an assessment.
As for notes, every student is expected to keep his/her own notes - not just any presented by the teacher. There are a variety of manners to do this.
Students will have access to the Student Dynamic eBook via Big Ideas in Clever to highlight and place digital sticky notes in (something we couldn't do with the hardcover textbooks).
Students can take their own notes while from the additional files and sites we visit.
Students can seek out their own learning . Sure, there is an expectation to follow along in class. Alas, experience tells me that once some students get hooked on a topic, he/she will seek out valuable materials on their own.
It will be very important that students submit not only their answers, but their work as well. The two main ways to do this would be to A) submit a picture of their work or B) complete the work digitally on a KAMI PDF, Google Doc, or Microsoft Word.
Students are expected to make corrections to any assignment for which they do not show full proficiency yet! That is, any student can resubmit their work after making corrections within the 3 week grading period for up to a 4 out of 4 .
