Maggie Buurma is one of those rare student-athletes who elevates every space she enters — not just because of her talent, but because of who she is. Known just as well for her leadership and heart as for her wrestling ability, Maggie has become a cornerstone of our program and a role model for our entire school community.
She’s a multi-sport athlete — volleyball, golf, softball, tennis — but her commitment to wrestling stands out above all. Maggie has been a captain of our team for the last three years — something incredibly rare in our program. In fact, in over 40 years, she’s only the second sophomore we’ve ever named a team captain. That speaks volumes about the maturity, presence, and leadership she brought at such a young age — qualities that have only grown stronger over time.
What makes Maggie truly special is her selflessness. She’s spent the past three years volunteering two nights a week with our youth wrestling program, helping coach and mentor the next generation. She doesn’t do it for recognition; she does it because she cares deeply about giving back. On the mat, she’s stepped into highpressure situations time and time again and given everything she has for her team. She’s the definition of a team player — someone who can be counted on when it matters most.
Academically, Maggie has held a 4.0+ GPA throughout high school, taking both regular and Advanced Placement classes. She sets high standards for herself in the classroom and meets them with the same work ethic she shows in athletics. She leads by example in every sense of the word.
Maggie may describe herself as quiet and shy — but anyone who’s spent five minutes with her knows she lights up every room she walks into. Within minutes, she’s surrounded by people, drawing them in with her smile, her warmth, and her energy. She’s a magnetic leader — the kind others naturally gravitate toward. Maggie Buurma has been the heart of our program. Her leadership, compassion, and excellence will leave a lasting legacy here. Fowlerville Wrestling won’t be the same without her, and wherever she goes next, she’ll continue to lead, inspire, and make people around her better.
