Classroom

Overview of the virtual Classroom and how we hope it can help you train for a sUAS qualification.

Even when there is in-person meetings allowed:

  • this virtual Classroom is available anytime you are, no travelling, no scheduling conflicts

  • you can accomplish about 80% of the sUAS training virtually, the ground school part, especially when it's not a good day to fly

  • you can use the Classroom at your own pace

  • you track your own progress right in the Classroom

  • you can join scheduled Google Meets with a teacher, mentor or instructor. Dates and times can be posted right in the Classroom Stream, on a Google Calendar and emailed to you.

  • when we have the opportunity and good flying weather you can concentrate on the flight school part

We currently have a very limited number of sUAS SET qualified members to sign off tasks. We are working on several options to get this accomplished for you. In the meantime you can still gain knowledge and experience with the sUAS Program and Operations using the Classroom.

A sUAS SET qualified member could:

  • be sent the passing results of a quiz you take for each task (assignment in Classroom)

  • meet with you virtually online to evaluate your task performance measures

  • with some planning and coordination of people, equipment and aircraft you could video tape hands on demonstrations or evaluations for the other 20% of the training, the flight school part

The order of tasks in the task guide, the different SQTR versions, and Classroom are all different. The two sUAS qualifications are sUAS Technician (UAST) and sUAS Mission Pilot (UASMP).

The Classroom was organized with these things in mind:

  • tasks are divided up into Modules, roughly estimated to take 2-3 hours per Module

  • the Classroom could be used as a modular guide to fit into many different training schedules

  • related or similar topic tasks are grouped together and in a progressive order

  • Other Requirements are tasks for both UAST and UASMP and are general CAP or FEMA courses

  • Module 1 is an Introduction to the sUAS Program, some presentations from NHQ

  • Modules 2-4 are all UAST tasks, only a few are not required for UASMP

  • Other Reqs, Modules 5-7, and Final Reqs are all UASMP tasks, none are required for UAST

Reading the rest of this page before joining a Google Classroom is recommended so you may have a better understanding of how it works, or why it may not work. If you are are already familiar with Google Classroom, the link for the sUAS Program and Operations Classroom is at the bottom of this page.

You need a certain type of Google account/edition to join the sUAS Program Classroom hosted on miwg.cap.gov account which is a Google Workspace for Education edition.

All Michigan Wing members have an account waiting, claim yours here and skip the account type explanation.

If a student (or co-teacher) uses Classroom with this type of Google account... = Can the student join the class?

miwg.cap.gov account = Yes, preferred way

Personal Google Account = Yes, miwg.cap.gov allows it

Education or Nonprofit edition = Yes, if class setting in your organization (outside of miwg.cap.gov) allows it

Basic, Business, or Enterprise editions = NO, Google does not allow these at all

How to check your Google Workspace edition type:

sign in to your Google account and then go here:

https://support.google.com/a/answer/6043385

(Dec 2021 this link no longer provides the following info, only a domain admin can access this)

under 'Your account and edition' you should see something like this:

Your account: miwg.cap.gov

Your edition: Education

If it is asking you to sign in you are likely using a personal Google account, which is ok.
