Electronics and Communication Students Association (ECSA ) -Activities

       The Department of Electronics and Communication has been supporting its students to participate in Curricular and Co–Curricular activities. ECSA, abbreviation of Electronics and Communication Students Association, was established on 16th April 2009.  All the students of Electronics and Communication Engineering department are the members of the ECSA Forum. ECSA was founded with a view of giving a new dimension to the present education system. This Forum provides ample opportunity to students to discover and exhibit technical skill, presentation skill, and communication skill in organizing various events. Department forum publishes newsletter periodically. It gives wide exposure to the students to express and share technical knowledge and also gives the bird view of department activities, achievements of staff and students. Under ECSA forum the Cass Toppers and University rank holders are felicitated with certificate of appreciation and cash rewards.

The Inaugural function of Electronics and Communication Student Association (ECSA) for the academic year 2021-22 was conducted on 8th November 2021. Dr. Mohit P.Tahiliani was the chief guest for the event. The formal ceremony commenced with a prayer song and was followed by virtual lighting of the lamp. ECSA president Mr. Adthiya Umesh Shet introduced the office bearers and presented the ECSA report for the year 2020-21 and highlighted the achievements of the students in curricular and co-curricular activities. Proceeding further the Department news bulletin “CONNECTCHIP” was unveiled.

An Online Workshop on "PCB Design Using KiCAD", by Mr. Uday J, Sr. Asst. Professor, Dept. of ECE, MITE, Moodabidri, was organized on 10th July 2021. 

Mr. Uday J started his presentation with a brief introduction to the Printed Circuit Board(PCB) . During his presentation, he gave insights to the students regarding the materials used in PCB fabrication, types of PCB and the PCB design procedure. He informed which are all the tools available for PCB design- OrCAD, Fritzing, Express PCB, KiCad and he briefed about KiCad tool and its uses. After explaining all the concepts required for PCB Design, he demonstrated the two layer PCB design of an LED blinker circuit using the 555 timer IC. He explained how to see a 3D-view of the selected component. After completing the routing and masking, he display the 3D view of the designed PCB. Finally, he explain how to generate PCB films.

A Webinar on “Insight on Higher Education" by Mr. Rohan Shetty, Mortgage Advisor, Good Money Limited Canterbury, New Zealand and Mr. Praveeth Dsouza, Security Analyst, FireEye Inc, Ireland was organized on 19th June 2021. 

Mr. Praveeth briefed  on the importance of understanding the cost of living and advised to do thorough research on cost of living, job availability in the city of preference for higher studies. Mr.Roshan further added on few points in specific to cost of living in Auckland and Christchurch situated in New Zealand. Mr.Roshan highlighted the importance of having work experience before doing post graduation which helps in understanding the key concepts while doing the course. They elaborated about the admission process in colleges, its requirements. Speakers further provided guidelines related to visa process , accomodations (guest houses in campus), funding process, educational loan, necessity of having bank account in the country, work visa, skill requirement in the country, advised to look into government policies of the country and internships.

Also explained about “Pancha kosha” philosophy of human body consisting of Five layers and laid out the proceeding and plan of the session..

A Webinar on “Physical Significance of Poles and Zeros of a Second-Order System", by Dr. Guruprsad K R, Associate Professor, Dept. of Mechanical Engineering, NITK, Surathkal was organized on 10th June 2021. The speaker-initiated session with basic concepts of control systems. He briefed about the concept of properties of system like linearity, time-invariance, SISO, MIMO, etc.  He also enlightened students about mathematical concept of transfer function and importance of poles and zeros in determining the stability of LTI system. By taking an example of second order system he explained behavior of system for different damping factor.  Dr. Guruprasad presented how to design a Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) controller based on the required specifications. Finally he told the performance of the system is basically depending on the pole zero location in s – plane.

Mr. Dony Dsouza, Senior Assistant Professor welcomed and introduced the alumni. He further briefed the rules for the presentation. Final year student project abstracts were scrutinized by the alumni ,10 best project were selected. Presentation of the project along with demo was scheduled  on 9th June 2021 for top four batches. The following suggestions were given by the industry experts for the  projects and two projects were nominated for VTU financial assistance. After the presentations were completed the panelists gave an suggestion to the students to work on hardware details of their respective project. They further appreciated the ideas of all the project batches.

A Webinar on “Applications of Linear Algerbra in Electronics and Communication Engineering" by Dr. P Sam Johnson, Associate Professor, Dept. of Mathematical and Computational Sciences, NITK, Surathkal was organized on 2nd June 2021. Dr. P Sam Johnson started his presentation with a brief introduction to elementary concepts of linear algebra followed by the electrical properties that are used in the circuits. Later, the speaker delved into the topic of orthonormal sets and gave real time examples of applications of control systems. The main focus of the talk was to make students understand the various applications used in satellite where the control theory plays a very major role. He also elaborated on the properties of the control systems that are controllability, observability and optimality.

He briefed on the history of Mobile Application Development and described about its present and future application areas. He also enlightened students about various factors under application development and also told to have awareness on fraud application in the process of developing the app. Later he extended his talk to the topic of ‘Android App Development’ and gave the clear idea on its features and advantages in the field of technology. Mr. Shettigar demonstrated a program on Android App Development- Build App which helped the students to clearly understand the concept of building an App.

Mr. Prasanna Kulal in his presentation  briefed about communication protocols applicable to the Automobile Industry. He gave insights on how communication happen between Electronic Control Units (ECU)  with different network interface in Cars. He enlightened the students about the communication between ECU  with CAN, LIN, FlexRay and Ethernet. Finally, he demonstrated with a video on functioning of airbags and described the complete working process and explained the network management and different system states such as ON, OFF, sleep and deep sleep of the ignition system.

QUIZ Competition “ANVEER 2.0”

Target Audience: 2nd and 3rd year Students of ECE

About Competition: Quiz competition ANVEER 1.0 was conducted by ECSA on 26-12-2020. This quiz competition was conducted in two phases where all 2nd and 3rd year students had undergone the first Phase of the quiz, i.e. preliminary round. 30 MCQ questions were asked on the domain of general knowledge, current affairs and technical topics. Team consisted of two or three team member’s. The students appeared for the quiz conducted through google form medium. The teams were shortlisted based of the team with highest average.

In Preliminary round of the quiz, top 8 teams with highest average were qualified for Final round. The Final round of the quiz conducted in an online mode via Google meet based on the topics general knowledge, polity, sports, tourism and animal kingdom. Each team were asked 6 different questions from different from the topics where each question carried 5 marks and duration of 45sec each. Winners and Runner up were announced on the official ECSA Instagram handle.

A Webinar on “Wavelet Analysis for Signal Processing” was organized on 4th December 2020 by Dr. Ram Bilas Pachori, Professor, Department of Electrical Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology, Indore. The session started with a brief introduction of signal representation in three basic domains- namely time, frequency, and scale. He enlightened the students about the concept of Fourier Transform and narrated on how Fourier succeeded in his life inspite of all his difficulties. He then emphasized the Applications, Advantages, and Shortcomings of Short-term Fourier Transform (STFT), Continuous Wavelet Transform (CWT), Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) along with necessary equations. He concluded the session by urging students to show interest in various topics of interest like signal processing and machine learning to mention a few. At the end of the session, a quick Q&A session was hosted to clear doubts and queries regarding Wavelet analysis and it was addressed by the guest speaker with the affirmative.

ANTARAGNI -Virtual Cultural Mania was organized on 28/10/2020. Ms. Tulasi Pejathaya of Shri Vishnu Sangeetha Nilaya and Mr Arpith Manohar of Red Hawkz School of dance were the judges. An official announcement concerning the rules and regulations of the event was sent to all the branches. There were two events in the contest: Dance and Singing. In both the events there were two prizes: best sensational performance and most loved performance. Best sensational performance was considered based on the assessment by the judges whereas the most loved performance was based on the number of likes that he/she received on their post on the official ECSA Instagram page. There were a total of 29 participants. 17 for singing and 12 for dancing. Best sensational performance was awarded to Ms. Anjana R Shetty (dance) and Mr. Adhitya Shet (singing). Most loved performance was awarded to Ms. Krithi K Shetty (dance) and Ms. Rithika Srinivas (singing).

GATE Quizzards

Date: Every 1st week of the month. Starting from 10/10/2020 

Target Audience:  2nd  and 3rd year students of ECE

'GATE Quizzards' – A series of online quizzes were conducted by the Department in association with ECSA for the 2nd and 3rd year students. It was initiated with an objective of helping students to strengthen their fundamentals in the core subjects of ECE. The main emphasis was to build the confidence of the students who aspire to appear for the GATE examination. These series consisted of an hour long quiz organized in the first week of every month from October 2020. Every quiz would focus on a specific GATE-related topic and the students would be given sufficient time to prepare. At the end of the academic year, the top two students, each from 2nd and 3rd year were felicitated.

A Webinar on “Software Testing and Importance of Accessibility Testing” was organized on 10th October 2020 by Mr. Ramesha N, Associate Manager, Excelsoft Technologies Private Ltd, Mysore. The speaker briefed about software testing, its importance, types of software testing, disabilities of software, the different standards of compliance and the tools for testing the software. This was followed by a brief introduction to different types of software testing such as Smoke and Sanity testing, Automation, Compatibility, System, Performance, Usability testing and so on. He then dived into the concept of accessible software and its importance. This concept focuses on enabling access for people with disabilities such as visual, hearing, physical & cognitive impairment. Further, he narrated how accessibility testing is performed to ensure that the application being tested is usable by such people. He also informed the students about the three compliance standards which have been proposed by the WCAG (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines). He also showed the usage of testing tools which included screen recorder, screen magnifier, color test, keyboard, and automated tools. The session was concluded by briefing the benefits of software and accessibility testing, and a Q&A session wherein the queries of students were resolved. The webinar helped to demonstrate the knowledge of software testing and its applications in multidisciplinary environments.

Activity on "Know Your Aptitude "                                             

Date : Every Friday from 25/09/2020 

Aptitude tests are a way for employers to assess a candidate's abilities through a variety of different testing formats. Aptitude tests will assess the ability to perform tasks and react to situations at work. Realizing its significance, the Department has introduced “KNOW YOUR APTITUDE” test series. Online Aptitude Test series are conducted for 2nd and  3rd  year students. It focuses on Logical reasoning, Verbal ability and Quantitative aptitude. The event is scheduled every Friday virtually. The Placement Department has extended their support by conducting Aptitude training classes. These test series were helpful in familiarizing the students with the test pattern commonly used in the recruitment process. Active Participation was shown by the students every week, which drastically improved their problem-solving skills.

 In his address, Mr. Murulikrishna Pattaje, enlightened the students about the Semiconductor industry. He explained how there is a paradigm shift towards the electronic industry now and how a fresher could prepare in order to reap maximum benefits. He gave an insight on the generational trend towards Artificial Intelligence, Automotive, Internet of Things, Augmative and Virtual Reality etc. He also gave an overview on the manufacturing of VLSI chips. The process of making wafers, Masking, Etching, Doping, Testing and Packaging were very well explained by him. He discussed the dominance of IP- fabless companies. Fabrication companies are limited to TSMC, Samsung and GF. He gave a complete insight on the chip making process. Steps include Chip specification, Design Entry/ Functional verification, RTL synthesis, partitioning of chips, Design for Test (DFT) insertion, Floor planning, Placement stage, Clock tree synthesis (CTS), Routing stage and Final verification. He advised the students to grab opportunities and update their skills to accommodate changing technological trends. Knowledge on verilog, UVM, C language, Scripting, Linux handling, protocols such as AXI, AHB, I2C, SPI, PCIE, Ethernet, HDMI etc. Handling of tools such as Mentor, Synopsis and cadence could be greatly beneficial in boosting the career prospects of a fresher.

The Inaugural function of Electronics and Communication Student Association (ECSA) for the academic year 2020-21 was conducted on 28th September 2020. Mr. Murulikrishna Pattaje was the chief guest for the event. The formal ceremony commenced with a prayer song sung by Adithya Shet and was followed by virtual lighting of the lamp. ECSA president Mr. N Prajwal introduced the office bearers and presented the ECSA report for the year 2019-20 and highlighted the achievements of the students in curricular and co-curricular activities. Proceeding further the Department news bulletin “CONNECTCHIP” was unveiled. This was succeeded by a brief Articulation and Inauguration of the programme by the Chief Guest Mr. Muralikrishna Pattaje, Technical lead, Synapse Design Automation Inc, Bengaluru. He encouraged the students by citing instances of failures from his own life and motivated the students to never settle for a loss and keep practicing and learning from mistakes. This was accompanied by the Presidential Address delivered by our Principal Dr. G L Eashwara Prasad. Mr. Rahul Katoor proposed the vote of thanks, thus marking the end of the formal session.

In his address, he enlightened the students about the Good Ethics which is a fundamental requirement of any profession. It is integral to the success of the business as well. Ethics is a system of moral principles governing the appropriate conduct of a person or a group. Maintaining good ethics is being consistent with the principles of correct moral conduct constantly. He mentioned some of the major threats which are harmful for the workplace ethics such as fraud, black money accumulation and dishonesty with data which affects the customers by misleading advertisements. He also gave insights of insider trading which is illegal to make profit with prior known information and also about conflicts of interest where maintaining close relationships affects the growth of the individual and can also hinder the organizations growth. 

Invited Talk on “Hardware Connectivity with MATLAB & Simulink”  by Mr. Tabrez Khan, Senior Application Engineer, Math Works India.

In his address, he enlightened the students about the hardware connectivity with MATLAB and Simulink. MATLAB combines a desktop environment tuned for iterative analysis and design processes with a programming language that expresses matrix and array mathematics directly. He explained about Modern MATLAB toolboxes which are professionally developed, rigorously tested and fully documented. Mr. Tabrez Khan briefed about how to integrate the generated code as source code, static libraries or dynamic libraries into the applications and the usage of Embedded Coder to translate the models into high quality source code and executable files for prototyping and production. Simulink is integrated with MATLAB program and data can be easily transferred between the programs. The talk was helpful in demonstrating the knowledge of engineering in multidisciplinary environments.

He is also a proud alumnus of MITE. Mr. Krishna Narasimha, in his talk gave an insight on how to build a resume effectively and described the general tips to crack a job interview. He highlighted the need to scale up one’s skills with the changing technology and develop knowledge on big data, block chain and analytics to engage in independent and lifelong learning in the broadest context of techno logical change. He suggested the students to apply the knowledge of mathematics and science to analyze complex engineering problems. Developing excellent communication skills can help propel future prospects. Confidence is the key to effective communication. Being able to articulate well provides a significant advantage. Punctuality, politeness and maintaining a good body language are some of the key aspects to crack an interview. Having a firm determination, confidence and a never say no attitude opens the door to the ‘dream job’ was the highlight of the session.

QUIZ Competition “ANVEER 1.0”

Quiz competition Anveer 1.0 was conducted by ECSA on 28/09/2019. This quiz competition was conducted in two phases where all 2nd year students had undergone the first Phase of the quiz, i.e. preliminary round. 50 MCQ questions were asked on the domain of general knowledge, current affairs and technical topics. In 1st round of the quiz, 30 students were qualified for second round. The second round of the quiz conducted in auditorium-I where all 30 participants were accommodated in different teams. Various rounds were conducted such as Pick-a-Topic, Rebus, Puzzles and General knowledge conducted back to back. Based on the scores, three best teams were selected for 1st , 2nd and 3rd places. The event ended successfully with happiness for all the participants. The finalists have received prizes for their efforts they put in. 

Technical talk on “Electronic Devices and its Application”, by Dr. Srinidhi G A, Assistant Professor, Dept. of Telecommunication Engineering, SSIT, Tumkuru.

Dr. Srinidhi first emphasized on the history of semiconductors, and gradually went into deeper aspects like Band theory, Fermi energy, Charge carriers, Conductivity, Hall effect and Doping. This helped the students understand why the discovery of this breed of materials have had such a profound impact on the world of electronics. He also spoke about the different steps involved in the manufacturing of Silicon -an abundantly available semiconductor material from sand and shed light on the process of IC fabrication. He concluded his session by providing an overview of the present technology illustrating how much it has changed from the past due to progressive innovation and modification of electronic devices. This session was beneficial for the students and enlightened their minds to view their surroundings with a perspective of an Electronics Engineer. 

“College Level Anveshana - A Innovative Project Exhibition” in Association with Agastya International Foundation and Synopsys Corporation, Bangalore.

College level Anveshana was organized on 16/09/2019 and it was initiated by Agastya International Foundation, Bangalore in association with Synopsis India Ltd. The main aim of College level Anveshana was to bridge the knowledge gap between schools and engineering colleges and to develop Innovation and Creativity through mentoring. The invitation by Agastya international foundation, Bangalore has been the result of consistent performance of students of the department in the previous editions of State Level Anveshana. Students participated enthusiastically and presented their projects. Mr. Ruthwik Kashyap, Agastya International Foundation Bangalore, Dr. Kumar, Assistant Professor, Dept of Mechanical engineering, NITK and Mr. Pradeep Kumar B R, Senior Assistant Professor, Dept of MBA, MITE were the jury members. The project evaluation was based on Project Status, Innovation and Feasibility. The program provided an opportunity for school students to interact with engineering students and find technical solutions to problems encountered, facilitate integration of ideas and learn new concepts.

After announcing the result, juries gave suggestions about their idea implementation, presentation, resource usage also motivated participants to convert project as a patent.

 A two day workshop on ‘Hands-On Electronic Prototyping and Debugging’ was organized on 16/08/2019 and 17/08/2019. Mr. Edwin Thankachan emphasized on fundamentals of electronic components and their applications. Working of a relay switch, voltage regulator 78XX series, 555 timer IC, LDR, IR transmitter and receiver, voltage divider circuit and Potentiometer were explained with real world examples. The students gained an experience in debugging basic circuits, identifying the faults and simulating circuits using Proteus software. By the end of this workshop, students were able to design operational amplifier circuits and gain practical knowledge on the applications of transistors.

He explained how to apply data mining & analytics techniques to develop intelligent systems to solve real-world problems. Session helped students in gaining a general understanding of data mining & analytics techniques. He explained the concepts associated with data analytics in practice, learn tools in use in data mining areas, various areas of advanced analytics including clustering, statistical regression model, classification, etc.

Mr. Gopalakrishna Kallimar, Senior Layout Engineer, KarMic, Manipal delivered a talk on September 19, 2018. He enlightened the students about the opportunities available in the field of Analog circuit design & layout design. Then he briefed on the different layers in designing methodology, challenges in each layer and design optimization. He motivated the young minds with the marvels of electronics industry. He briefed the process of formulating the Integrated Chip from the design level to the fabrication process. He also explained the significance of an analog layout for various applications where the data has to be preserved in its analog form .

Dr. Rastogi gave a brief introduction about the semiconductor materials and their characteristics. He also explained the various semiconductor devices and the process involved in the manufacturing of semiconductor chips. He enlightened the students about the opportunities available for the graduates in VLSI industry.

In this interactive session,  the speaker briefed about the present market scenario of placement and how a student need to prepare to face an Interview by acquiring the necessary skills. In the present era, campus placement holds a great importance for students and educational institutes. While, it helps a student in building a strong foundation for the professional career ahead without facing the real-world job struggle, peer-competition or family pressure, a good placement record gives a competitive edge to an institute/ university in the education. He added that, to successfully work in a growing collaborative and global community, employers will be looking for candidates who show an ability and openness to communicate with unfamiliar cultures and ideas. To build these skills, students will need exposure to open discussions and experiences that can help them feel comfortable communicating with others.

A Technical talk on “Neural Networks and Applications” by Dr. Ashok Rao, Former Head, Network Project at CEDT, IISc Bangalore was organized on 17th February 2018. Dr. Rao emphasized on the importance of Artificial Neural Network and its Applications. He started with the explanation about the functioning of the human brain followed by the comparison of the brain with traditional computers. The basic reason why we are interested in building the artificial neural networks and the working of artificial neural networks was explained using the Boolean OR and EXOR gates. The error estimation and the two basic types of learning were explained. Finally, applications of ANN in different fields followed by its advantages and disadvantages were discussed. The talk was concluded by stating that ANN is an initiation of the biological neural network in a much simpler way.

An alumni interaction session by Mr. G Radhakrishna Prabhu from the batch of 2008-12 was arranged on 4th October 2017. Mr. Radhakrishna is currently working as a Deputy Manager, Process control and Instrumentation in MCFL, Mangalore. He gave a talk on ‘Ace the technical engineering interview’ targeting an audience of third year students. He addressed some of the critical topics such as experience in industry environment, how to grab the opportunities during the interview and overall view of life of a fresher after graduation.

A Technical talk on “Application of Engineering in Healthcare” by Mr. Vishwaprasad Alva, Managing Director, Skanray Technologies, Skan-X Radiology Devices Europe was organized on 26th September 2017.Mr. Alva, mainly focused on the use of computer processed combination of X-rays. He also spoke on the generation of modern day 3-Dimensional and 4-Dimensional analysis in medical imaging. He compared the operations and advantages of CT scan over X-rays and MRI scan. The CT scan uses X-ray beams for scanning the body as it moves through an arc taking many pictures. Unlike CT scan, which uses X-rays, MRI scan uses powerful magnetic field and Radio Frequency pulses to produce detailed pictures of organs, soft tissues, bone and other internal body structures. He also stressed on the side effects of using Ultra sound.

A Motivational talk on “Sustainable ambitions and meaningful achievements” by Dr. Madhukar Shetty, IPS, Deputy Director of S.V.P, National Police Academy, Hyderabad was organized on 25th September 2017. 

Dr. Madhukar spoke on how to choose a life of truth over the present lifestyle of hype by mentioning some of the instances of his life. He advised the students to maintain ambitions which are sustainable on a long run. He shared his personal experiences which he had when he was deputed to be a part of the team assigned to capture the notorious brigand Veerappan. According to him, achievements should be meaningful and should satisfy the self-consciousness.

Dr. Niranjan started the session by giving an introduction about his company and the various projects. He stressed upon the necessity of video surveillance in various fields and the existing methods for the same. He also demonstrated the implementation of video analytics with step by step procedures. Video Analytics is the industry's most advanced and comprehensive range of analytics, allowing users to capture, index and search faces, license plates, objects, colors and more. He encouraged the students to take up various innovative projects which could help them in getting recruited in core companies.

A Motivational talk on “Indian Navy- A way of Life” by Lt. Cdr. Priyambada Sahoo, Indian Navy was organized on 5th September 2017. 

Lt. Cdr. Priyambada Sahoo had participated in the prestigious Indian naval women officers marching contingent during the Republic Day parade 2015 is currently posted as an Instructor in E & C Engineering faculty at the Indian Naval Academy. In her address, she enlightened the students about the opportunities available for the graduates in the Indian Navy. She shared her training experiences at INA. Then she briefed on the different examinations and screenings that are carried out by the Indian Navy before recruitment.

He enlightened the students about the basics of Signals and Systems with real time applications. The session was mainly focused on various types of signals and their processing. He also explained the processing steps of EEG and ECG signals in diagnosing various disorders.

A technical talk on “Covert Communication” was delivered by Dr. K B Shivakumar, HoD of Telecommunication Department, Training and Placement officer, Shri Siddhartha institute of Technology, Tumkur.

His talk was focused on the significance of using different information securing techniques in communication. He briefed the students on different types of covert communication in practice starting from the age old technique of watermarking, cryptography and the most widely used method of steganography .The latter can be used in applications of different forms of data like images, audio, video and texts. Mr. Mohammed Sadique briefed about Embedded Systems using various types of Microcontrollers. He explained the working of different Microcontrollers and types of electrical components. The ECSA (Electronics and Communication Students Association) entered into another academic year with its branch inauguration ceremony on 18th August 2016. The function for welcoming new members to the ESCA family was presided by the chief guest, Dr. Shivaling S. Mahant Shetti, Chairman Emeritus, KARMIC Design Private Limited along with the Principal, Dr. G.L. Easwara Prasad, HOD of ECE, Mr Sathisha, ESCA coordinator, Mr. Prakash K Shetty and the newly elected president of ECSA , Mr. Mohammed Sharique. The inauguration was followed by a technical talk on “Fundamentals of Analog VLSI Design” by Dr. Shivaling S. Mahant-Shetti. He explained the basics of various analog components and their workings with some analogy. He also briefed the various opportunities available for the ECE students in VLSI industry and motivated the students to come up with some innovative project ideas

Mr. Thakshak Shetty, briefed about Control and Embedded Systems. Modern embedded systems are often based on micro-controller i.e. microprocessors with integrated memory and peripheral interfaces, but ordinary microprocessors using external chips for memory and peripheral interface circuits are also common, especially in more complex systems. He elaborated on the working of SoC design complexity, demands, and comprehensive verification methods to accelerate verification and debugging. He encouraged the attendees to have the opportunity to expand their own understanding of embedded design and the inspiration behind it. He concluded by highlighting the applications and said that, embedded systems are used in transportation, fire safety, safety and security, medical applications and life - critical systems.

The Main objective of this one day workshop is to provide the awareness to the students on Simulation of Signal Processing using open source tool. He explained about Octave, is one of the free software, runs on GNU/Linux and Windows and he explained how its syntax is largely compatible with MATLAB. He given a demo on the Octave interpreter that can run in GUI mode, as a console. It is having one good advantage is MATLAB scripts can run in Octave. He briefed on octave software with examples of easily extensible and customizable via user defined functions written in Octave language. Also using dynamically loaded modules written in C++, C, Fortran, or other languages. This software useful to Visualize data in 2D and 3D using high-level plot commands and executed code by taking some simple examples.

Lt. Commander Priya Jeyakumar initiated the motivational talk on “Opportunities in Indian Navy” with an inspirational video, which instilled a sense of pride and nationalism in every eyes watching it. She briefed about primary objectives of the navy in safeguarding the territory, people or maritime interests of India against any threats or aggression both in war and peace. Insight on how women are inducted into different cadres/specializations of the Navy was highlighted in the talk. The commander concluded the session by encouraging and motivating the young minds to take up Indian Navy as their career to serve the country.

He specified the involvement of cross disciplinary activities that integrate the engineering science with biomedical science to improve the human health. He explained how engineering concepts and technologies could be used for the development of instrumentation, artificial organs and medical devices needed in health care and hospitals.
