Staff Mentoring Program (StaMP) Pilot
Staff Mentoring Program (StaMP) Pilot
What is StaMP?
StaMP is a mentoring program that was created by SoE staff for SoE staff, with the goal of connecting more experienced staff members into developmental relationships with other staff members who want to expand their skills and experiences.
Learn more about StaMP here:
Recording of the info. session
(Note: the caption needs some work. We will update with a proof-read and edited version)
When will StaMP start?
StaMP will launch a six-month-long pilot in Spring 2023.
We had an info. session on May 2, 2023, and we have populated this site with volunteer mentors and mentees' information.
Please check out the volunteers and feel free to make a connection.
We have scheduled an Orientation & Workshop on June 29. Please see details at the Roundtable Series tab.
Benefits of Mentoring
Developing leaders and managers.
Improving onboarding and acclimation of new hires.
Transferring institutional knowledge.
Boosting retention.
Promoting partnership and inclusiveness in a more connected SoE work environment.
What would make a good mentor?
A good mentor would have:
The desire to work with someone and share information.
The ability to have a two-way communication.
The willingness to accept mentee's input as well as provide guidance and support.
Distinct, important skillsets to share and the skills and ability to successfully deliver that knowledge.
The desire to pass on MIT's important values and culture.
The desire to help MIT as a whole and make it a stronger organization.
Read the mentoring ground rules and guidelines to make sure this is something you want to do.
For potential mentors, think about what you have to offer as mentors.
For potential mentees, think about why you need a mentor.
Fill out this form to let us know of your interest in participating and if you would like to participate as a mentor or mentee.
We will add your profile to this page.
Mentees can then choose from the available mentors and contact them by email.
Once you've made a connection, please fill out this form to let us know. We need to keep track of all the connections to update the availability status of the participants.
To help you with your mentoring, we suggest that you use this Mentoring Proposal. It will help with setting your goals and keeping track of your progress and achievements.
You will be asked to fill out a couple of surveys, half way and at the end of your mentoring relationship.
Both mentors and mentees need to agree to these ground rules. We recommend you review them before your first meeting and revisit them as often as you wish.
The School of Engineering (SoE) appreciates your willingness to participate in StaMP. SoE promotes respect and responsibility for all staff. As such, it is crucial that a safe and respectful environment is established for both mentors and mentees.
All StaMP participants are expected to read and adhere to the below rules.
By participating in StaMP, you commit to the following:
Connecting with your Mentor/Mentee once a month for the duration of the six-month pilot, or as agreed to by both parties.
Being proactive with scheduling monthly interactions and also promptly responding to communications.
Completing online check-in forms as requested by the StaMP staff.
Submitting end-of-mentoring-relationship survey.
Abstaining from conduct considered improper and inappropriate. The prohibited conduct that is listed below is not an exhaustive list, as we cannot, with foresight, determine inappropriate conduct under every circumstance. Moreover, we do not limit the right to discharge participants for conduct that is not listed below.
Knowingly disseminate or transmit content that is unlawful, harmful, threatening, abusive, harassing, tortuous, libelous, pornographic or invasive of another’s privacy.
Stalk or harass another mentor or mentee.
Collect or store personal data about other mentors or mentees.
Share confidential information.
References: SoS Peer-to-Peer mentoring agreement,
Our recommendations for your first meeting:
Discuss goals and objectives. What are you both looking for in a mentoring relationship?
Discuss your similarities and your differences in your work styles and what you can both bring to this mentoring relationship.
Review expectations and responsibilities.
Create a structure for meetings and modify as appropriate.
The mentee should prepare a meeting agenda
Evaluate your goals
Go over successes and accomplishments
Establish ground rules as needed.
Discuss confidentiality and discretion.
Agree on the frequency and duration of the meetings. We recommend meeting every two weeks for 30- 60 minutes.
Choose a location & time. The location can be casual or more formal. For instance, in office setting or coffee shop.

About me: I am passionate about equity and inclusion, and happy to connect with mentees on these issues.
I've been a mentor for young people for 6+ years, including through the MIT Mentor-Advocate Partnership (MAP) program, as well as the YearUp program for urban youth. My best mentorship relationships through MAP have allowed me to share my personal interests as well as my knowledge of MIT's institutional history. It takes a mentee who is willing to have conversations, to share something about their own interests/goals/challenges, to have an effective mentorship connection. So I'd be interested in connecting with a mentee/co-mentor who wants to have a full and authentic connection, not limited to career advancement. I've also enjoyed mentorships where I can share my love of Spanish/Portuguese language and culture, my Jewish identity, and love of literature.
I've been at MIT for 20 years, first in international program partnership roles, and since 2010 in a role focused on industry partnerships, alumni relations, HR/admin, and overall program leadership. I benefitted greatly from the Leader to Leader program for staff leadership development, and have remained part of the L2L alumni planning team. I think my skills relevant to being a mentor include effective listening, empathy and emotional openness, a passion for connecting people to networks and opportunities, and a desire to advance and improve MIT. Before joining MIT as a staff member, I was a college English professor, and I enjoy the ability to relate to faculty and students through that lens.

About me: I have dedicated nearly 20 years to working in higher education. I have held a variety of roles, and understand the importance of politics and strategy in developing a career in higher ed. I also understand the difficulty in working with the different stakeholders at the Institute. I would love to work with someone early in their career, or looking to make a change into a new position/role to help them navigate change. I spent the better part of a decade working in graduate admissions and student services before returning to school for graduate study. I then worked as an ombus for two years before spending the last five years working in faculty development.

About me: As a mentor, I would like to participate in this mentoring pilot program with SOE. I believe I will build on my leadership as a financial professional at MIT and gain more experience teaching, listening, and learning from others. I am looking for mentees who are interested in finance/grants management areas so that I can add more value. With this, I will capitalize on my past mentoring and MIT experiences, and I will be more efficient in delivering value to my mentees. Kind of skills that I will be sharing are knowledge about the MIT systems, Financial Management practices, and MIT job search and interviewing skills. I got to my current position with more than 16 years of Accounting/ Finance experience from Africa, Canada, and U.S., and I am trained as CPA.
As a mentee, I am looking for mentoring to gain Senior Financial office skills/ role duties. Looking for someone who was or is a Senior Financial officer who can share what it takes to be successful in SFO role, what to look for, avoid, do...

About me: I am interesting in helping a new hire become familiar with the MIT working environment and the main campus. I am also interested in co-mentoring with another employee. I enjoy sharing the knowledge I've developed using various MIT applications and I also appreciate learning from others. I have worked on the main campus for nearly 6 years and find there is always something new to learn and share. About me: I would like to encourage and enable another person's professional and personal development. Help them achieve goals, expand their connections, and offer guidance based on my experience.
I can mentor an individual who has a positive outlook, demonstrates a willingness to work hard, a drive to succeed, and comfortable receiving objective feedback.
In 2020, I participated in the Student Success Program where I was matched with ten students to be their mentor and resource. I also offer guidance and training to many new hires in my previous department.
The skills I have to offer will depend on what my mentee's goals and objectives are.
I believe building and forging relationships are key to success. I make connections by listening and being a trusted ally. My experience in building relationships has helped me gain new perspectives and confidence in both my communication and leadership skills needed for my role.

About me: By mentoring someone, I would like to build a connection with someone who aims to build a career in higher education, that could include obtaining an advanced degree in higher education (masters or doctorate). I have about a decade of experience in higher education as well as a EdD so I feel I could add value and guidance to someone who might be looking for that path. My experience includes admissions, student services, and registrar. My skills include communication, student services, customer service, relationship building, and process optimization. These experiences led me to my current position at MIT.
As a mentee: I am new to my role and to MIT. I would love to connect with someone who also has a student services role within the SoE or who has worked with students at MIT. I am still trying to figure out MIT and could really use a connection within or outside my department to learn more of the institutional knowledge. I am also curious where I could go from here either within or outside MIT in terms of career guidance.
I'm really open to this process and would welcome relationship building no matter what!

About me: would like to use the mentorship network to extend my reach beyond my own department. I do not have a lot of experience navigating MIT, but I do have tons of experience working in highly-decentralized organizations. I think I can add value to colleagues trying to make sense of such an environment. In my previous job I started a community to support new expats joining the company to adapt to the culture and help them during their first few months; I can see myself supporting people with a similar challenge at MIT. In my current role I must excel at influencing others without formally having authority over them (since most of my influence occurs outside MIT), high cultural sensitivity (not only in terms of nationality but also in seniority/role/identity) to launch and support ad-hoc teams. I have worked as a consultant in three different countries and I can help other navigate complex environments -- specially when there seems to be no solution.
I am looking for leaders in more senior roles than mine and hopefully with a long tenure at MIT. Today, it is difficult for me to connect outside of my department (mostly due to lack of good excuses to participate in other activities). I would appreciate having a sounding board to navigate Institute politics and share experiences.

About me: I have now been at MIT for almost 20 years, starting as a temp admin, to AA2, finanical officer, and now AO/DAF. I think my path could give value to people relatively new to the institute wondering how to take the next steps. I have plenty of knowledge ranging from the technical (email processing, advanced excel) to the processes/policies of MIT and people -- knowing who ask about what. I would also value the opportunity to talk to people about opportunities within AeroAstro and generally widen my network.
Even after 20 years I have much to learn. I have been in my present role for a decade. It is challenging and though I feel I know a lot, there is always more to learn. Occasionally I also wonder about the options for further advance -- and whether that's compatible with having a young family.

About me: What I would like to get out of a mentoring relationship is advice on navigating a non-traditional academic career. What are/should be the metrics for success? What are the opportunities for advancement at MIT? What resources am I not taking advantage of? I am looking for a mentor who regularly conducts field work. Someone working in MechE would be best, perhaps in a non-traditional field (I work on development/global engineering) and someone who travels to conduct field work. I am looking for someone who has perhaps had other work experiences (industry) and who has built their career in non-traditional academic roles. I would be interested in talking to someone who has a lecturer and research role.

About me: I have been working as a lab tech for about 6 months with a hope to return to school for a phd in order to become a professor. As a relatively new college graduate, I am still unsure of what subjects I hope to pursue. I also have a lot of questions regarding the application process and what experience is important to eventually be hired as a professor. I think in general it would be very helpful to learn from someone who is a bit further into their career, especially from a female researcher with similar interests.

I hope to work with a mentor for career guidance and suggestions to accomplish professional goals, such as project management, entrepreneurship, and leadership.
An ideal mentor would have experience in both academic and industry settings, be able to advise on best practices for continued education, and know the best way to strike a life/work balance.

Type of mentoring I am looking for: Equity and Inclusion Focused
I prefer to meet in person
About me: I would expect a friendship out of this mentoring relationship. I am looking for someone (I) who can share their knowledge from their personal life, culture he/she grew up in, and (ii) someone who can point out faults in me and help me to improve myself. I was born and brought up in India, and therefore, would prefer someone from other ethnicity to be my mentor who has similar interests as mine. I would prefer a female mentor. No I am definitely not looking for any career guidance.
