More than anything else, students at the Karp Family Hebrew School at Mishkan Torahdevelop a joyful, profound, and long-lasting connection to their Jewish community.  The school is a place where children learn to embrace the diversity that has been the history of the Jewish people; a place where we recognize that there are so many different ways to be Jewish.   Through the arts, text study, and hands-on learning, students experience a wide range of what Judaism has to offer. They benefit from a wonderful classroom space, small class sizes, and committed teachers who are not just "hired help".  The well-rounded curriculum includes:            

• Instruction in Jewish customs, Modern Hebrew, and Liturgical Hebrew

• Study and practice of Jewish values and ethics 

• Music and visual art                                       

• Shabbat and holiday programs

• Opportunities to prepare and enjoy traditional Jewish foods

• Participation in the diverse Mishkan Torah Community 

• Interfaith Families are welcome and numerous at the Karp Family School.

We offer the following classes and activities:

Monthly Torah for Tots for families with young children (infants to age 4) led by Phyllis  Oresky. Torah for Tots includes Jewish stories, music, and art projects and generally  happens from 10-11 AM on the first Sunday of each month, during First Sudays at Mishkan Torah. Check the calendar to confirm dates.

Weekly Family Meetup and Dinner on Thursday evenings from 5:30-6:30 PM. Check the calendar to confirm dates.

Monthly Intergenerational Friday Night Dinner and Kabbalat Shabbat geared toward families with kids, but open to all ages, whether or not you have kids. Potluck dinner starts at 5:30, short family Kabbalat service starts at 6:30, and regular Friday night service follows at 7:05  right after the children are ushered out with song and dance. Dates for Fall 2026 include 10/30 and 11/20.

Pre/K – Kindergarten KFS Class: Sunday mornings from 10-11 AM. Taught by Cantor Yael Fischman, this class focuses on building friendships and a positive Jewish identity by learning about Jewish foods, holidays, songs, and traditions in a fun, informal setting. Some basic Hebrew language skills will also be introduced. Free, but registration is required. Please email kfsdirector@mishkantorah.org to register.

First & Second Grade Class: Sunday mornings from 10-11 AM. Taught by Karen Knee, this class focuses on continuing to build Hebrew language skills, learning Jewishprayers and songs, holiday traditions, and applying Jewish values and ethics in modern life. Morah Karen emphasizes playful, active learning, questioning, and discovery. This class is also suitable for older elementary schoolers who are new to Hebrew school.  Free, but registration is required. Please email kfsdirector@mishkantorah.org to register.

Older Elementary and Middle School Students: We are rebuilding our program post-pandemic and do not currently have a class for older elementary school and middle school students. However, we are committed to providing individualized learning if there is a need. Please email kfsdirector@mishkantorah.org to discuss.

Bar and Bat Mitzvahs: We encourage students to prepare for their Bar or Bat Mitzvah in a slow and steady manner by attending Hebrew school and then transitioning to more focused prep a year or two in advance. But if you are dealing with unusual circumstances and seeking a place for your child to become a Bar or Bat Mitzvah, we may be able to work with you.
