Math & Science

Week of September 14th:

This week in math, students will concludeworking on adding and subtracting . Students will take the Unit 2 Assessment, Monday (Today), and the District CBA over Unit 1 (place value) and unit 2 (addition & subtraction) Wednesday.

Math:

This week in Math, students will continue working on Addition and Subtraction with regrouping. Students will test of Unit 2 on Friday.

Science:

We are concluding our lesson on the properities of matter. Students will start investigating and comparing a variety of mixtures, including solutions that are composed of liquids in liquids and solids in liquids demonstrate that matter is conserved when mixtures such as soil and water or oil and water are formed. A sign up link will be sent out by your scholar's homeroom for donations to help with this lab.

Week of August 31st:

This week in Math, students will be starting Unit 2 on Addition and Subtraction with regrouping. Students are expected to add and subtract whole numbers and decimals to the hundredths place using the standard algorithm. Students will have to solve one and two step word problems within the thousands place.

Students will be shown different strategies to represent their addition and subtraction. Students can use chunking of numbers to create friendly numbers, expanded form, draw pictures using base ten blocks, or use the standard algorithm. The idea is to deepen their understanding of place value when adding and subtracting.

*Map Testing is on Tuesday and Wednesday for Reading and Math.

Week of August 24th:

This week, we will be continuing with Unit I over place value. Students will be exploring why digits grow ten times as they move to left and 1/10 when moved to the right. They will write numbers  from standard form to expanded notation and vice versa.  Some students are struggling with writing large numbers from word form to standard form using commas. Please review this over the week for more practice. Ex: Three hundred five million four is equal to 305,000,004

Week of August 17th:

This week, students will be starting Unit I over place value. They will be exploring the relationship between numbers based on their place up to one billion. Students will be analzying the difference between place and value to explain why a digit grows 10Xs as it moves to the left on a place value chart. By the end of the week, students will be able to write numbers in standard form, expanded form, word form, expanded notation, and compare large numbers based on their knowledge on place value.
