The Ensembles/Classes
Honor Band
The Honor Band is an advanced band and considered FSMS's top performing ensemble. Students in the wind ensemble demonstrate an advanced and growing level of musicianship, mature work ethic, and a superior attitude. Students both perform and compete in contests and competitions throughout the year.
Symphonic Band
The Symphonic Band is an intermediate band and considered the second performing ensemble at FSMS. Students in the symphonic band demonstrate a growing level of musicianship, mature work ethic, and superior attitude. Students both perform and compete in contests and competitions throughout the year.
Concert Band
The Concert Band is FSMS's third performing band. The Concert Band is a fundamentals-based band as we work to continue developing our skills and musicianship while demonstrating mature work ethic and a superior attitude. Students perform and have the option of competing in contests and competitions throughout the year.
Beginning Band
The Beginning Band is made up of students that have no prior experience on a wind or percussion instrument. No musical experience is necessary! Students are taught in instrument specific classes, and have 1-2 full band rehearsals outside of school before each concert. Beginning Band students participate in all concerts (fall, winter, and spring), solo contest, and one concert band competition during the spring semester.
Jazz Band
Jazz Band is an optional ensemble that meets once a week after school for an hour. In order to participate, students in jazz band must also be a member of a traditional FSMS band class during the school day. While traditional jazz bands are comprised of saxophones, trumpet, trombones, and a rhythm section (drumset, bass, guitar, piano), anyone who would like to participate in Jazz Band is welcome to do so! Regular attendance to participate in this ensemble is required, and absences must be communicated with Mr. Koch in advance.
