Customer Facing Process
DA Facing Process
The customer provides an address and selects a preview of the map location using google maps.
The DA creates a completely custom map for the customer, using Snazzy Maps.
Note: Occasionally the customer's google map preview will break in MBO. When this happens do your best to guess the correct cropping. The customer will be able to let us know via an annotation if they would like any adjustments.
Proofing Check List
Match the style of the Minted Original Image (Line vs Filled).
Match the location shown in the Customer's Preview Map. If you are unsure of the location, use a note to the customer asking for confirmation.
Use the correct Snazzy Maps style for either Filled or Line Maps. If necessary, adjust the settings to ensure lines are thick or thin enough to print well. Note: Scroll down for a guide on using Snazzy Maps.
When working on multi-item orders, make sure all items are aesthetically consistent.
Make sure to double-check the customers color selections and choose the correct swatch from the Minted Color Palette.
cDon't forget to proof-read any text.
A Note on Color Profiles in AI
Important: Filled maps generate with an incorrect color profile in the WTP files.
As a DA: Manually correct the color profile in AI.
As a QC: Double check to confirm the DA has corrected the color profile.
Before loading, editing, or saving styles you’ll need to create a Snazzy Maps account.
Create a username
Use your Minted email address
Create and confirm your password
Press "Register"
Download the Line and Fill JSON map styles from mntd.space, under Scripts
Please keep in mind that these are base templates for our main map styles
Each customer proof is unique and may require adjusting the settings to accommodate the individual map being proofed
In Snazzy Maps, navigate to “Create A Style” and select “JSON Import”
Create A Style can be found in the top navigation bar, JSON Import will be the last option at the bottom of the page
Open the JSON style you would like to use, either Fill or Line
Copy and paste the full code within the editable field in Snazzy Maps, then click Apply Style
Your map should update with the Minted base style
Save your JSON Style using the Floppy Disk Icon
This will allow you to quickly choose between saved styles, rather than repeatedly loading and recreating a new style
Use the top right search bar to match the customer location
You will have to click the on the search options loaded by Snazzy Maps, rather than pressing “enter”
Select the zoom level and cropping you would like to use, before making any style adjustments
Use the scroll button on your mouse to quickly zoom in and out of your map
You can also use the built-in plus/minus icons provided by Snazzy Maps
Click and drag on the map to adjust the position and reorient yourself
Minimize the editing interface before taking a screenshot, to see a full preview of the map
Start by establishing the zoom and crop best suited for the map you are working with. Once you have settled on a zoom level you can make style adjustments as necessary. It’s best to establish a zoom level before making style adjustments because zooming in and out of the map will affect the width of the streets and lines.
ROADS
Roads are broken into three subgroups: Highway/Controlled Access, Arterial, and Local. Keep in mind that you will need to edit each subgroup individually. By default, Fill is turned off and Stroke is turned on for each road. This setting is the same for both the Fill and Line map styles.
ADJUSTING ROAD WIDTH
Select the subgroup you would like to adjust
This will most commonly be Local or Arterial
Select Stroke and scroll down to Weight Use the slider to adjust the road’s width
If necessary, adjust the remaining subgroups
Each road type (Highway/Controlled Access, Arterial, and Local), should have a consistent weight, except where variations are included intentionally to improve hierarchy
SHOWING FOOTPATHS
Select Fill and turn visibility On.
This will show smaller local paths and provide extra detail where roads are not common. Ex: Parks + College Campuses.
Select Stroke and turn visibility Off.
When both Fill and Stroke are visible the weight of the road is doubled. Best practice is to show one element at a time (Fill or Stroke) and adjust the weight of the visible element as necessary.
MAP ADJUSTMENT NOTES
Footpaths: When working with footpaths you may want to take two screenshots, one for local streets and one for footpaths. You can then combine screenshots in Illustrator or Photoshop, giving you an extra level of adjustment control.
Transit Lines and Water: You can also edit Transit Lines as well as bodies of water by scrolling down to the relevant sections and adjusting the visibility, fill, stroke, and color.
DOWNLOADING
Snazzy Maps has a built-in download feature, however it is currently limited to 10 downloads per day. After the limit has been reaches, DAs can use the Snipping Tool to take a screenshot and paste in illustrator. For a larger screencap area simply make the Snazzy Maps window full screen, giving yourself more room to work within.
CREATING THE ILLISTRATOR IMAGE
Once you've downloaded your Snazzy Maps image, simply place it in Illustrator and use the Image Trace tool to create a vector path. See the screenshot to the right for suggested settings.
Note: These are suggested settings and should be edited on a proof-by-proof basis for best results.
Non-Grid Maps Not every address is going to look as interesting as a city grid system. In those cases, customer permitting, try zooming out some from the the entered address in Snazzy Maps, and the city at large can be more striking in appearance.
Framing Customer permitting, play around with where the address falls within the frame. Sometimes the most interesting view does not lie in the center.
Preset The image trace preset may not be perfect for every map. Be sure to adjust settings as needed, especially for thinner lines (which tend to be two-lane suburban streets).
Printing Options Foil, Letterpress, and Digital Printing
