COUNSELING

School counselors, in addition to providing counseling services, provide instruction in the following essential skills required for success in school, community, and work settings:

  • Academic/learning skills

  • Communication skills

  • Relationship/friendship skills

  • Decision making/problem solving/self-management skills

  • Organization and planning skills

  • Academic, college, and career planning skills

The ultimate goal of comprehensive school counseling programs is student success. The program is delivered through the school counseling curriculum, individual student planning, responsive services, program management, and system support. The three domains of academic, personal/social, and career development are addressed in the program as it focuses on what all students, pre-K through grade 12, should know, understand, and be able to do in order to develop into contributing members of their communities.

SCHOOL SOCIAL WORK

School social workers provide an ecological approach to promoting student success. They assist children and families by examining factors in the home, school, and/or community that impact a student’s education success and work toward reducing barriers to learning. Barriers may include but are not limited to truancy, pregnancy, alcohol and other drug abuse, suicide and sudden death, child abuse and neglect, school safety, violence, trauma, grief, basic family needs, economic factors, behavioral difficulties, social competencies, divorce, mental health concerns, and learning factors, such as special education needs. Each school within MPS has a school social worker as part of the faculty. Many social workers in MPS are bilingual, including among the languages Spanish, Laotian, Hmong, Arabic, and sign language. If you have specific concerns or would like to speak to a school social worker about your child, please contact your child’s school.

PSYCHOLOGICAL SERVICES

School psychologists help students at all grade levels to succeed academically, behaviorally, socially, and emotionally. They collaborate with school staff, parents, community agencies, and other professionals to help create healthy and supportive learning environments. School psychologists also help to strengthen the home/school/community connection for all students.

Support Services Mission

Rufus King IB High School has a full-time School Psychologist, Amy LaPlante-Ortiz, and School Social Worker, Tyrelle Perkins, to help meet your adolescents needs throughout the school year. We also have a part-time School Psychologist, Abby Dreps, and School Social Worker, Megan Haug.

We work with students on issues which may impact their educational performance. So issues include long term illness, poor attendance, mental health (for example, sadness and/or anxiety), peer relationships, economic and/or housing, transportation, and grief. We also evaluate students who are experiencing significant academic delays.
