Assessment Information
Overview
In order to provide the best and most appropriate instruction to our students, assessment must play a key role in our classrooms as well as our collaborative time together. We know that getting to data-driven literacy instruction along with our strong teaching means designing an assessment system that will accomplish three key goals.
1. Regularly evaluate the quality of the educational programming for all students and key sub-groups.
2. Periodically identify and monitor readers’ specific skill profiles against what’s expected for age/grade.
3. Look closely at readers’ response to specific lessons and units, to inform lesson planning.
Literacy Screener
Screening provides a reader profile and monitors the progress of each student, over time. Data from screeners is easily aggregated for useful and efficient analysis that we can compare overtime among classes to identify progress and performance on specific skills in literacy. This data is triangulated with classwork, curriculum embedded assessments, and longitudinal data to create a learner profile. All students will participate in this screener three times this year (fall, winter and spring) and teachers will participate in analysis during common planning following the administration with Curriculum Coordinators.
Grades K-5 administer DIBELS 8 through mCLASS as its literacy screener three times per year.
Grades 6-8 administers the iReady Reading diagnostic three times per year.
Curriculum Embedded Assessments
Curriculum Embedded Assessments are designed to be closely aligned with what was taught and offer fine-grained instructional insights that teachers can use to make small, more frequent adjustments to match student needs. Grade teams can and should use these as a way to adjust and inform planning for implementation. For this reason, all grades K-8 will administer these curriculum embedded assessments determined during curriculum planning and use any other assessments related to that practice when appropriate.
