Welcome to Millway Primary School
MPS Curriculum Vision
At Millway we aim for our children to be:
Successful lifelong learners who aim to be the best they can be.
Aspirational individuals who are committed to persevering.
Healthy, happy and confident young people who are curious, investigate and explore.
Good citizens who value honestly, democracy and diversity.
Fluent individuals who ask questions, have opinions and are respectful of others views.
Our curriculum is driven by our four golden threads: Diversity, Aspiration, Curiosity and Fluency.

At Millway Primary School we strive to offer a curriculum that is engaging, ambitious and rigorous that will develop the whole child. Our intent is to offer a broad and balanced curriculum based upon the needs of our children which builds upon their strengths, nurtures their talents and challenges them to do more. We endeavour to offer a memorable curriculum which builds upon prior learning and knowledge and develops opinion and ideas.
At Millway Primary School we have created a 3D curriculum that promotes remembering and ‘sticky knowledge’ that is revisited throughout the whole primary curriculum. Academic achievement is only part of the vision for this school. We provide many opportunities for pupils to excel in our unique selling points: Music and Sport. Our dedicated music teacher gives children the opportunity to have high quality music lessons along with our link with NMPAT who offer many musical opportunities.
Our dedicated Sports coach and links with the Duston sports cluster gives children the chance to learn to play a variety of sports and compete in competitions. Year R follow the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum with the emphasis being on learning through play. Well thought out activities alongside child-initiated play are key to the development of children. The Foundation Stage is set out into seven areas of learning which are Personal, Social and Emotional Development (PSED), Physical Development (PD), Communication and Language (C&L), Literacy, Mathematics, Understanding the World (UW) and Expressive Arts and Design (EAD). The Curriculum sets out 17 ‘Early Learning Goals’ which children are assessed on at the end of their first year in school.

The National Curriculum for Reading is split into two parts: Word Reading and Comprehension. Phonics is key to the development of early reading and at Millway Early Years and KS1 follow the Little Wandle Phonics Scheme which is taught daily. Little Wandle phonics draws on the latest research into how children learn best; how to ensure learning stays in children’s long term memory and how best to enable children to apply their learning to become highly competent readers.
Progress is monitored regularly by teachers and the English Lead. Year 1 take part in a phonics screening in June and the results are reported on a pass or fail basis. If any child does not pass this test then they will have the opportunity to re-sit the screening when they are in Year 2.
