How Mills College uses the data collected for continuous improvement: Annual data submission, analysis, and feedback.
The continuous improvement process begins when the Dean collects data from each credential program on admissions, ranked faculty, adjunct faculty, field supervisors and student achievement. In combination with student exit survey data, course evaluations and information collected at program meetings, these data points offer insight on candidates' readiness for jobs, types of courses program should offer, effectiveness of the faculty and field supervisors, and the number of staff needed to support the program operation. The Dean analyzes the data to set goals for continuous improvement in these areas for each credential program. After the Dean has set goals, she meets with the program chairs and discusses the data and the goals. Adjustments are made as program chairs offer suggestions. Finally, the revised program improvement plan and goals are presented to the credential faculty at a full-time faculty meeting. Faculty grapple with the goals in their program groups and also across programs. Further revisions are made, and goals for the coming year are finalized.
Here is the full-time faculty meeting schedule as well as the Meeting Agenda template for 2017-2018 school year. Meeting minutes can be found here.
Example: Data from Academic Year 2016-2017
As competition has increased, some programs have become less competitive. The greatest area of concern is in the teacher preparation program. Competition is high given some charter schools and nonprofits are now able to provide credentialing offerings.
Goals for 2017-2018:
- Focusing on the Mills College undergraduates as a source of enrollment for the teacher preparation program
- Launching a substitute teaching seminar for seniors in partnership with Sustainable Schools
- Putting more resources into recruiting Mills undergraduates into the 4+1 program
- Maintaining relationships in OUSD to continue to recruit for the ASC and ECE credential programs
- Finalizing the 2+2 program with Merritt College that will bring students into the Child Development major and MS teaching credential
Ranked Faculty: The School of Education hired two ranked faculty members in 2016-2017. One of the new faculty members directs the single subject credential program and the other will work with ASC students. These hires reflect the College’s commitment to our credential programs.
Goals for 2017-2018:
- Continuing to advocate for ranked faculty by articulating the value of having a long term commitment to the institution by faculty and the impact on students
- Mapping the retirements in the department in order to plan for replacements
- The Dean has organized trainings for program chairs and program directors to help them understand their roles
Adjunct Faculty: We continue to attract new high quality adjuncts, as we also retain adjuncts who have taught in our programs for years. Creating a welcoming culture that supports adjuncts is important to the School of Education faculty and staff.
Goals for 2017-2018:
- Dean serves on the Labor Management Committee in order to learn more about the new SEIU union contract.
- Adjunct faculty are invited to monthly receptions in the School of Education to mingle with staff and faculty.
- The dean is supporting adjuncts in attending conferences for their professional development.
- Program faculty assists adjuncts in writing syllabi and answer all questions about the Mills system and students.
- The dean organized “onboarding” materials for all new adjuncts to orient them to the School of Education.
Field Supervisors: The field supervisors at Mills are a committed group of individuals, some of whom have been involved in our programs for years. Field supervisors in the teacher preparation program meet each week for one hour for professional development and attend the student teaching seminar.
Goals for 2017-2018:
- Will provide training to field supervisors – either online or face-to-face.
Student Achievement Data 2016-2017: The student achievement data from programs reflects that students get a high degree of support in completing the Mills credential programs. Tracking students who struggle remains a key concern.
Goals for 2017-2018:
- Each program is developing an Improvement Plan system as an intervention for students who are struggling and need extra support.
- The teacher preparation program developed a course on disabilities to be taught in January in the 2017-2018 academic year.
- The ASC program will evaluate more closely if the School Law (EDUC 412) needs to be increase to a three unit course. Student feedback indicates more time in this course may be needed.
- The Early Childhood Education programs restructured their programs in 2016-2017. The new design, including adjustment to course credits, will be evaluated through faculty observation, student feedback and student work.
- The ASC faculty will form a partnership with OUSD for recruitment of students into the program.
Practices of all programs that will continue:
- All credential faculty are meeting monthly.
- Program chairs are meeting with the dean two times per month.
- Will hold program retreat for faculty to discuss curriculum once per year.
- Faculty and staff are meeting two times per term (4 times per year).
- Faculty are meeting with Mills College Laboratory School Head and Assistant Head two times per term (4 times per year).
