AP CHEMISTRY

About AP Chemistry

The AP Chemistry course provides students with a college-level foundation to support future advanced coursework in chemistry. Students cultivate their understanding of chemistry through inquiry-based investigations, as they explore content such as: atomic structure, intermolecular forces and bonding, chemical reactions, kinetics, thermodynamics, and equilibrium.

Laboratory Requirement

This course requires that 25 percent of instructional time engages students in lab investigations. This includes a minimum of 16 hands-on labs (at least six of which are inquiry-based). It is recommended that students keep a lab notebook throughout.

Skills You'll Learn

  • Designing experiments and procedures to test a prediction or theory

  • Creating graphs, diagrams, and models that represent chemical phenomena

  • Explaining how the microscopic structure of a substance determines its chemical properties

  • Balancing a chemical equation

  • Making a scientific claim and supporting it with evidence

Prerequisites

  • Honors Chemistry

College Course Equivalent

The AP Chemistry course is equivalent to a one-year, introductory college general chemistry course

Teacher Corner

Do you enjoy chemistry? Is it likely that you will be taking chemistry in college? The AP Chemistry course is designed to be the equivalent of the two-semester general chemistry course usually taken during the first college year. A solid background in math, graphical analysis and chemistry is necessary to be successful in this class. The multiple choice section of the AP test requires mental math and reasoning skills, as calculators are NOT allowed on this portion of the test. The depth, breadth, and pace of this course will be much more challenging than the first year chemistry course, so be ready to work. But, the rewards to that hard work are valuable. Throughout the course you will gain skills in time-management, stress-management, organization and learn more about yourself as a learner. All of these skills can help you achieve more success in future courses. Here is an overview of the AP Chemistry curriculum with generalized pacing for the nine units: Course Overviews based on College Board Course-Exam Description (CED)
