February 2026 - Module 3
Dear Parents and Carers,
Time flies when you're having fun, and never is that truer than here at Milestone. Despite the almost non-stop rain, our days have been full and bright, with classrooms and outdoor spaces alive with activities and learning.
As you will see from our wonderful updates below and across our class web pages, the breadth and depth of our pupils' exploration and learning has been extensive. From sensory play, to mark-making, to bringing Aztecs and Ancient Greece to life; our students continue to shine in everything they do.
Much work has been done during this module on projects that will come to fruition during Module 4, as our Phase 3 students have been busy rehearsing for the annual Shakespeare festival, our Phase 4 students have been working hard in preparation for exams; and our Secondary PMLD students have been using the Soundbeam technology in their music lessons to prepare for a performance alongside a live orchestra at the Woodville Halls.
On that note, please make of note of the upcoming key dates in Module 4, which include:
Tuesday 3rd March - School photos (M@LAW, M@SGLA, M@LAD)
Tuesday 10th March - School photos (Mainsite, M@LACO)
Thursday 12th March - The Friends’ Someone Special Wrap (mainsite)
There is much to share from Module 3, so please do enjoy the highlights in this newsletter before visiting your child’s class pages, where you can find richer detail about all the incredible learning activities your young person has been experiencing.
We are looking forward to the increasingly milder weather and the chance to further enjoy our outdoor spaces. In readiness for the adventures of Module 4, I wish you all a restful half term break with your family; and perhaps a few pancakes if you are so inclined! We look forward to welcoming you back on Monday 23rd February 2026!

This term, our Phase 1 pupils have taken part in a wide range of sensory and hands-on learning experiences designed to support physical development, communication, and wellbeing. Throughout the term, pupils also experienced moments of calm and mindfulness through sensory play, helping them to feel relaxed, settled, and ready to learn.
Through imaginative play linked to Goldilocks and the Three Bears, pupils enjoyed filling, pouring, and transferring oats. Feeling the oats move through their hands, scoops, and containers helped develop fine motor skills and hand–eye coordination, while also encouraging early story awareness and familiarity with a traditional rhyme. Pupils were supported to play alongside others, sharing resources and taking turns during play.
Pupils explored food and healthy choices through touch, sight, and play. They handled small-world food resources, practised picking up, sorting, and placing items, and began to understand that food comes from plants and grows in different ways. Sensory exploration supported pupils in expressing likes and dislikes and developing awareness of natural foods.
As part of self-care and personal wellbeing, pupils explored why we clean our teeth and how this helps keep our bodies healthy. They practised brushing and scrubbing movements using tools, supporting independence and further developing fine motor skills.
Creative activities offered opportunities for pupils to explore colour, design, and shape. Using loose parts, pupils experimented with colour mixing and pattern-making, while playdough sessions allowed them to squeeze, roll, and shape materials to create simple sculptures. These experiences supported creativity, hand strength, and early three-dimensional expression.
It has been a positive and engaging term, full of sensory discovery and meaningful learning experiences that support each pupil’s individual development.

This module has been full of colour, creativity, and sensory exploration, and the children have been wonderfully engaged throughout.
We have explored the story 'The Day the Crayons Quit' with the children focusing on different colours from the story and exploring a wide range of textures linked to each one. These sensory experiences helped the children make meaningful connections between colour, touch, and creativity. Alongside this, the children completed a variety of mark-making and art activities, developing their fine motor skills and artistic expression while bringing the story to life.
We also spent time exploring the much-loved story 'The Very Hungry Caterpillar.' The children created artwork by printing with different fruits, discovering the unique shapes and patterns each fruit made. They enjoyed hands-on exploration of a variety of fruits in the tuff trays, using their senses to investigate textures, smells, and colours. Faciliating activities based around the story, supported early problem-solving skills and reinforced key themes from the book.
In addition to our story-based learning, the children have continued to develop their personal and social skills through a range of group and sensory activities. It has been a joyful and enriching module, and the children have shown great curiosity, creativity, and enthusiasm in all that they have done.

This term, our Phase 2 explorers have embarked on a fascinating journey under the Transdisciplinary Theme, 'How We Organise Ourselves'. Through our Central Idea, 'Everything Follows Rules', pupils have been investigating the roles people play within a community, the properties of different materials and the powerful impact our actions have on the world around us.
To bring these concepts to life, we travelled back in time to the world of the Aztecs. The classrooms have been buzzing with sensory-rich activities, from the tactile challenge of constructing Aztec temples using various rocks, to diving into the spiritual role of the Sun Priest.
Our young artists have also been busy by exploring intricate Aztec designs and geometric symmetry alongside creating unique prints inspired by the sculptural style of Louise Nevelson.
It has been wonderful to see the students connect with an ancient civilization in such a relatable, hands-on way, discovering that while times change, the need for structure and creativity remains the same.
Please take a look at our Phase 2 Class pages to see what the different classes have been up to.

Michelle Hilton - Assistant Principal Phase 2
During Module 3, pupils at the M@LAD Satellite took part in a transdisciplinary learning journey based on the PYP theme 'How We Express Ourselves.' Through the central idea that the features of a place influence how people live and work together, pupils explored culture, community, creativity, and environment in meaningful and practical ways, with a continued focus on developing life skills, independence, and emotional regulation.
Pupils expressed their understanding through creative, physical, and practical experiences, using art, design, language, and technology to share ideas. Cultural learning was enriched through the exploration of Vaisakhi and a whole-satellite visit to the Gurdwara. Community participation within the local area, regular swimming lessons, and shared experiences supported confidence, communication, and teamwork. Pupils were also encouraged to reflect on their dreams, goals, and aspirations, helping to build self-awareness and a strong sense of belonging within their learning environment.
We are so proud of what the students have achieved lately. Please take a look here: Phase 2 Class pages to visit our class pages and see what they have been doing.

Beyond the ancient myths, Phase 3 students mastered real-world skills by managing the school tuck shop and sharpening their Maths through multiplication, division, and sharing. Their focus on health and wellbeing saw them crafting Greek dishes with feta and olives, while "Dream and Goal" sensory sessions helped them set personal targets using dream jars.
By studying the Suffragettes and collaborating to build a model Greek community, pupils learned the power of standing up for what is right and working as a team. Whether exploring the new immersive room or practicing liquid listening, this module proved that while these students are unique individuals, they are at their strongest when they work together.

Kyle Marsh - Assistant Principal Phase 3
During Module 3, our learning focused on the central idea that people create systems and rules to help our world work together and stay fair. Through this lens, pupils explored how physical and social structures organise our world, how systems support representation and rights, and how change can impact established systems over time. These ideas came to life through rich discussions, practical activities, and thoughtful reflection across the curriculum.
Beyond the classroom, pupils took part in several enriching experiences, including a British Red Cross First Aid workshop, which supported their understanding of safety and helping others. They also enjoyed swimming lessons and football sessions led by Dartford Football Club, promoting teamwork, resilience, and healthy lifestyles. These experiences, alongside our curriculum learning, have made for a busy and rewarding module.
We hope everyone has a lovely and well-deserved half-term break, and we look forward to welcoming pupils back refreshed and ready to learn.

During Module 3, Phase 4 students focused their learning on the central idea 'We make valuable contributions to our community.' Students explored the many ways they can contribute to their class, school, and wider community.
As part of this learning, students began an exciting group project during horticulture sessions to clear, tidy, and revamp the memorial garden. This project aims to create a calm and sensory space that can be enjoyed by all students across the school.
Students also learned about different jobs and responsibilities within our school community that help keep our environment clean and welcoming, including caring for the flat and classrooms. To deepen their understanding of people who help us, Phase 4 students were lucky to be visited by a police officer and a paramedic, who shared insights into their roles, uniforms, and equipment and how they support our community.

What a fantastic (and busy) module we’ve had. It was impressive to see how quickly the students settled back into school life after the festive break, and have worked so hard throughout. They continue to truly embrace their business enterprise routes, working diligently to create some stunning pieces of furniture through our pre-loved and re-loved initiative.
A special highlight the crafting of a mud kitchen by our woodwork pathway students, which will be a wonderful addition to the forest school area at mainsite.
We have also enjoyed working collaboratively with Leigh Academy Snowfields as different groups of students have enjoyed visiting them, and transferring their Asdan employability skills to different settings.
Additionally, students have enjoyed enriching experiences visiting local colleges, and a group had the delightful opportunity to explore the Turner Contemporary Museum, which they absolutely loved.

Wishing everyone a lovely half term

The momentum in PE during Module 3 has certainly continued, with many full - filled activities and experiences taking place across all of our Milestone sites. Take a look at the amazing extra-curricular opportunities we have taken part in this module!
Milestone students shine at Inclusive Cricket Festival
A group of enthusiastic students from Milestone@SGLA travelled to Strood to take part in an Inclusive Cricket event, hosted by Active Kent and Medway. Our students had the opportunity to participate in a circuit of engaging activities which focused on a range of cricket skills such as catching, throwing, movement, communication and hand-eye co-ordination.
Boccia Battles for Milestone@LAD
Our young people from Milestone@LAD showcased their incredible spirit at an Inclusive Boccia tournament. It was a day defined by patience, resilience and teamwork, with all students attempting Boccia for the first time. Excellent sportsmanship was on display and it is safe to say we have some talented Boccia players at Milestone!
Table Cricket is a hit for Milestone Mainsite
Students from Leigh Academy Milestone mainsite travelled to Kent County Cricket Ground to play in a Table Cricket tournament. Table Cricket is an inclusive adaptation of cricket that can be played by all. Students thoroughly enjoyed competing against a range of other schools and learning new skills. Our young people really developed their confidence throughout the day and came away with huge smiles on their faces.

Growing Together: Exciting Updates from Our School Grounds
It has been a busy and productive term in Horticulture! Our students have been hard at work developing their teamwork, design, and practical skills across several exciting projects. Here is the latest progress on our school grounds development:
Phase 3: Planning for Growth
Our students have officially kicked off the planning stage for their class raised-bed. The students are learning valuable project management skills through choosing a design and the planting required for this. Our first three designs are a Minion, pizza and rainbow themed garden. We can’t wait to see these designs come to life!
Phase 4: Revitalising the Memorial Garden
Work has begun on the sensitive and important task of renovating the Memorial Garden. This space is a vital part of our school’s history and community spirit. The students have been clearing branches and rubbish, and making products to enhance the space. The goal is to restore this area to a peaceful, beautiful sanctuary for PMLD classes.
ASDAN Group: Champions for Wildlife
Our ASDAN group has been showing-off their Design & Technology skills by constructing habitats for our local wildlife. The group has begun to construct sturdy bird boxes and hedgehog houses. These will be installed in suitable sites around the school to turn our school grounds into a thriving eco-friendly haven.

Healthcare Support Team
At the start of Module 4, the team currently known as ‘The Milestone Medical Team’ will be changing its name to ‘Healthcare Support Team’. This change is to better reflect the contribution of our team of Health Care Assistants in supporting pupils’ medical needs in school.
Module 3 has been as busy as ever. The Healthcare Support Team has supported Community Nurses during their visits to see pupils, hosted Paediatrician, Dietician and ADHD clinics, as well as an immunisation clinic at M@SGLA. After many years of planning, we have received confirmation that we will be able to host NHS eye clinics in school when these are rolled out later this year. We value the positive collaboration with specialist health professionals and hope it is useful for families. Specialist clinic dates are available on the website.
A couple of reminders...
Please ensure pupils have warm and suitable clothing while the weather is still cold as outdoor play is encouraged in all weathers.
If you are sending Paracetamol into school, it must be a new, sealed bottle. The only medication we can accept open, in liquid form, is antibiotics.

Therapy News
We are very excited to now have three members of staff who are trained in using Talking Mats. When using this approach, symbols are used as a visual to help pupils think about and communicate about different topics e.g. communication, hobbies, being at school, friendships, home. For more information, please visit Talking Mats.
Following the success of the Makaton family workshop held in March 2025, we are excited to announce that we will be providing further training for families. This is again in collaboration with the charity 'More Than Words.' Details to be provided in a letter next Module. Spaces will be limited to 15, so make sure you keep an eye on any updates.
Annabel, Speech & Language Therapist has joined our team. She is busy getting to know children and class teams.

Harper and Betty have continued to develop their friendship. When they are not in class or with pupils, they have important down time in the office napping or playing.
Toffee and Fudge have been enjoying their visits to classes individually, though Fudge does like to tell Toffee off when he comes back as she has missed out. But they do love to receive visitors when the students come to them, and take full advantage of the belly rubs - on those days, they go home happy and exhausted!
It’s incredible how much the children who see the dogs regularly have come to know them so well. They remember key information such as their ages, what they like and don’t like or how to communicate with them. They say 'you can’t teach an old dog new tricks' however, our pupils are teaching these dogs new tricks!
We are excited to announce that our popular gift wrap event will be held on Thursday 12th March at mainsite ahead of Mothers Day. Students will have the chance to purchase a beautifully pre-wrapped gift for someone special in their lives. Keep an eye out for more details coming soon.
Once again thank you for your continued support.
