Science Week 2020

August 15 - August 23

Welcome to Mary Immaculate, Ivanhoe

Science Week 2020 - Remote Learning style!

This week Mrs Baldwin has a number of activities planned for you to watch, explore, and even try at home with your families if you want! The theme this year is 'Deep Blue - Innovation for the future of our oceans'. Did you know that the Great Barrier Reef, off Queensland's coast, is one of the 7 wonders of the natural world and is the largest reef system in the world? Find out some amazing facts about our reef here... or explore the reef further through Sir David Attenborough's 'Great Barrier Reef - An interactive Journey'.

In line with the theme of Science Week, every class will be receiving (when we are back to onsite learning) Sea Monkeys to grow in their classroom. Check out the Sea Monkeys page for further information...

Activities

Unfortunately, we can't have our Science Week activity day at school as we usually do, so every day during Science Week, a new activity will be added to this website for you to try at home. Links will appear daily in your Google Classroom.

One thing we were going to be doing as a school during Science Week was to participate in a NATIONAL Science experiment, alongside lots of other schools from all around Australia! We were going to be exploring the forces involved in making a watermelon implode using only rubber bands!!!

Even though we are not onsite, we will still be participating in 'The Big Watermelon Experiment', being conducted by Dr Rob Bell of Experimentary, a TV presenter and former CSIRO scientist. Check out 'The Big Watermelon Experiment' page on this website for further information about this. IT IS GOING TO BE LOTS OF FUN!!!!!

On Tuesday of Science Week, each class will be having a Science Google Meet with Mrs Baldwin. Information will be posted on your Google Classroom closer to the date. HOWEVER, I challenge each student to dress up for their Meet and send me a photo that I can display at school.

Dress up, as what? I hear you ask. Why, in a Science theme of course!!

  • You can dress up as a Scientist - don't forget scientists work in hundreds of different areas - in the fields of biological sciences, physical sciences, chemical sciences and earth & space sciences....

  • OR, you can dress up in a science theme - you could be a test tube, a volcano, a planet, a magnet, an electron, a plant, a seal....

  • OR, you can dress up in an Ocean theme to match the theme of this year's Science Week 'Deep Blue - Innovation for the future of our oceans'!

Be as creative as you want - just be prepared to show off in our Google Meet!

START PLANNING NOW...

More cool science stuff...

Also, check out the tab about cool things that are happening in the world of science. I'll update it every week or so with new facts or interesting stories or cool experiments, and let you know through your Google Classroom.

This week there are some interesting space stories and a caterpillar that wears its old heads as hats...
