Team Alumni are new junior staff. Team alumni members serve equally as part of two teams: operations and ambassador support. They serve as the source of enthusiasm for the group as well as a relatable role model due to being a similar age to students. They are a listener and observer in group time. This role gives recent alumni a chance to work behind the scenes to understand how the seminar runs, while still contributing to the students’ experience.
Fundraise a minimum of $225 and log a minimum of 75 hours in the L4S site by the following deadlines:
April 15: $113 logged and mailed and 33 hours of service logged in L4S (of which, 2 hours of service must be with the recruitment/diversity, equity, and inclusion teams)
May 15: $225 logged and mailed and 75 hours of service logged in L4S
If not met, you will have a call with the director of staff to discuss your future plans.
Those who fundraise more than the minimum $225 will receive prizes as recognition of your outstanding efforts!
Attend at least one social justice series event (offered monthly)
Be enthusiastic. You’re part of a select group of alumni. Most importantly, you’re a role model for our students.
Be available. Applying to staff our seminar means you anticipate being available for the duration of the weekend.
Exceptions (including late arrivals and early departures) will only be made in unusual circumstances.
Be responsive. When a director or the leadership seminar chairwoman contact you with a request, respond within 48 hours.
Be transparent. Be open and honest about conflicts and status updates. We are here to help you!
You must raise $225 by May 15. We HIGHLY encourage you to fundraise this money and not have your family just write a check to cover the amount. By fundraising rather than writing a check, you commit to equalizing some of the socioeconomic privilege and creating a more inclusive environment for junior staff; everyone, no matter their family's financial state, is on the same playing field working towards raising these required funds.
This is IMPERATIVE as it helps us keep track of who we need to send thank-you cards to, and reduces the chance of funds getting lost. It also lets us know which organizations and businesses you've already approached for donations so that we don't double-ask them. Log this info regularly using the "Log Your Fundraising Here" button!
Note: if you participated in a fundraiser we offered (e.g.. DoubleGood), in most instances we'll add those amounts to your totals automatically. Sometimes, though, (e.g., with Bonfire sales) we'll need you to tell us which of the sales should be attributed to you.
When you receive donations or have money to send in, please mail it ASAP to:
HOBY Michigan
PO Box 230064
Grand Rapids, MI 49523
Make any checks out to: HOBY Michigan
Sending this money to us as early as you can helps us plan for our budget for seminar and best estimate how many resources we have to work with.
After you log your donation in the Google Form, you can choose to PayPal it to us instead of sending a check:

Junior Staff Fundraising Ideas: more than 60 ideas for ways you can raise money!
All junior staff are required to log a minimum of 75 annual service hours in the Leadership for Service website prior to May 15. Please log your hours regularly using the "Log Your Service Hours in L4S Here" button.
Need ideas on what you can do for service or what counts/doesn't count? See the HOBY Leadership for Service Getting Started Guide for more info on why logging L4S hours is important (e.g., raise community awareness about the importance of service, get college scholarships, get an award from the President of the United States!)
For more info and help logging in to the L4S website, follow the L4S Website Instructions.
At least two of your service hours must be logged with HOBY Michigan's Recruitment team. Contact our director of recruitment at recruitment@mihoby.org with any questions.

One of the biggest things you can do as a junior staff member to keep HOBY fun, engaging, and memorable for ambassadors (and give yourself and energy boost, too!) is to lead cheers! Our junior staff are primarily responsible for this VERY IMPORTANT part of HOBY Culture! Singing silly songs and loud cheers is not only a little (or a lot!) wacky, but it also helps our ambassadors come out of their shells faster and break down some of the walls they might have up.
Study these cheers (linked through the "Cheer Book!" button) and come prepared to have tons of fun singing and cheering at seminar!
Shhhh....it's a secret! This is one of our funnest traditions at MI HOBY! You'll be matched with a secret Santa-like buddy, which you can surprise with some treats or small gifts throughout the weekend, and you'll receive some treats as well! On the last day of seminar, you'll give your Secret HOBY your gift in person so they know it was you!
You'll receive more information about participating in Secret HOBY as seminar gets closer.
