Since 1991, scientists from approximately 45 nations have participated in nine International Conferences on Serpentine Ecology (ICSE). The conferences always highlight a region with intriguing serpentine soil-biota relations. Previous conferences have been held in the USA (California and Maine), New Caledonia, South Africa, Cuba, Italy, Portugal, Malaysia, Albania, and France. These conferences have become an international forum to discuss and synthesize multidisciplinary research on serpentine environments and have produced a platform from which scientists in different fields and from different regions of the world can conduct joint research. The 11th International Conference on Serpentine Ecology will be held during 13-17 June 2025 in Kyoto, Japan. For more information about the conference, please refer to the website: https://sites.google.com/mie-u.ac.jp/icse2025-kyoto/top-page
The Proceedings of the 11th ICSE will be published as a part of a Virtual Issue of ‘Ultramafic Ecology’ in Ecological Research, which is the official English language journal of The Ecological Society of Japan and publishes original papers on all aspects of ecology, including both aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. This journal is published by Wiley and indexed in SCIE (Science Citation Index Expanded) with an impact factor of 1.7 in 2023, and authors whose papers are accepted can publish free of charge (an Open Access option is also available for a fee). For information about the journal and the virtual issue of Ultramafic Ecology, see: https://esj-journals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/journal/14401703 and : https://esj-journals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/toc/10.1111/(ISSN)1440-1703.ultramafic-ecology?page=1
Manuscripts appropriate for the proceedings can cover a variety of subjects relating to plant-soil relationships in ultramafic ecosystems from all around the world, including ecology, taxonomy, soil science, and biogeochemistry. There are four article types: Research Articles (up to ca. 7000 words), Review and Synthesis (up to ca. 7000 words), Notes and Insights (up to ca. 4000 words), Technical Notes (generally up to 4000 words excluding references, but longer articles (up to ca. 7000 words) may be considered), Data Article, Forum and Biodiversity in Asia. For all article types we are seeking high-quality competitive manuscripts that will be subjected to rigorous external review. We accept submissions not only from conference participants but also from other researchers. Full author guidelines for preparation of a manuscript can be found on the website of Ecological Research. There are two ways to submit your manuscript:
Authors can submit a manuscript via the submission site in the same manner as general submissions. The current submission site is: https://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/ecores. Please note that Ecological Research is expected to launch a new submission platform with a different URL later this year. Be sure to check for updates and confirm the correct site before submitting your manuscript.
- Please prepare manuscripts following the author guidelines of Ecological Research, which can be found: https://esj-journals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/hub/journal/14401703/homepage/forauthors
- Please declare that the manuscript is for the proceedings of ICSE2025 in the cover letter.
- Please choose the issue 'Serpentine Ecology' at the submission step.
Alternatively, authors can send the following information to the Ecological Research Editorial Office (ecores[at]esj.ne.jp) when you decide to submit your manuscript and provide:
- Title (a tentative title is acceptable)
- The corresponding author (name and e-mail address)
- The expected submission date
Then the author will receive a submission invitation e-mail from the editorial office. The e-mail is linked to a form for an invited manuscript.
