WATCHUNG 3rd GRADE SAFETY PATROL TEAM
(and 2nd GRADE SAFETY PATROL TEAM SUBSTITUTES)
Third grade has the special privilege of being part of the Watchung School Safety Patrol Team.
These six 3rd grade students earn their place on the Safety Patrol Team by exhibiting the positive character traits we focus on all during the school year: Caring, Citizenship, Fairness, Honesty, Kindness, Respect, Responsibility, and Trustworthiness. Those students selected for the Safety Patrol Team show their teachers, the staff, and their peers that they have the ability to follow the rules, respect their classmates, and have a desire to help others.
This is a voluntary rotating team selected each month, to assist Mrs. Dudley and the teachers with our morning entry procedures to help make sure that the younger students get to where they need to be, to help in the hallways at the beginning of each school day, and by setting an example for the younger students during the school day. The Safety Patrol Team will have new members selected to begin on the first school day of each new month for the year.
Since the 3rd grade students earn a place on the Safety Patrol Team and it is a privilege, the possibility exists for a student to be removed from the Safety Patrol Team for exhibiting negative character traits (opposite to those that would make them eligible to be on the Safety Patrol Team). Safety Patrol Team members who are exhibiting behavior requiring Teachers to speak with them more than once will be removed from the Safety Patrol Team before the month is over and will be replaced. It is also possible that some students will have an additional place on the Safety Patrol Team while others in the classroom are still in the process of earning their place on the Team.
A group of six 2nd grade students will be selected to be the Substitute Safety Patrol Team for the day of the 3rd grade class trip and also during the week of State testing. These 2nd grade students will be selected from the 2nd Grade Library Helpers by their teachers following the same criteria as the monthly selection of the 3rd graders.
The Watchung Safety Patrol Team is coordinated by Coach MacMath and Mrs. Erchick with the monthly Safety Patrol Team member selections being made by the 3rd grade classroom teachers.
The Safety Patrol straps, badges, end-of-year certificates and pins are provided free of charge by the local AAA office. Each member of the Watchung School Safety Patrol Team will receive a certificate, wallet card, and a small Safety Patrol badge pin at the end of the school year.
