Marigolds are a flower in the Asteraceae family. They are classified as angiosperm. Marigolds are native to Missouri and much of Central America. Marigold flowers are composite and bloom in clusters. The flowers can be yellow, orange, or red. The stems can be solitary or clustered, and the leaves are arranged opposite. They are often planted in garden borders and are used to deter pests. They are also an important aspect in Día de los Muertos traditions in Mexico.
Marigolds are a special plant to me because my sister and I used to help our mom grow them on our windowsill. Our mom let us pick out the flower we wanted to grow, and we chose marigolds for their bright, golden color. The small routine of planting the seeds, watching them sprout, and watering and caring for them was memorable. Now, every time I see a marigold it reminds me of my mom and sister.
