Blueberries - Vaccinium Australe
Blueberries are a fruit from the Ericaceae family of plants, and is classified as an angiosperm. The plant is not native to Missouri, as they only grow in very acidic, well-drained yet moist soils in areas with cool climates. This makes places like Maine optimal for their growth. The plants are perennial shrubs with elliptical leaves arranged alternately. The bushes produce small white or pale pink flowers in addition to the berries. There are over 50 cultivars, and they are often grown commercially in the America's.
Blueberries have always been a special part of my family's summer. Each year we stay at my grandparents house in Maine during July, and while we are there we often go on hikes. There are always a ton of wild blueberry bushes along the trails. We always make a point to acknowledge the plant anytime we see one. We would also make blueberry shortcake each summer.
