On Friday, April 22nd, Miami students will be holding a silent sit-in on a public sidewalk of our campus. This aligns with this year's Day of Silence, an annual event to raise awareness for the silencing of LGBTQ+ people in schools.
We're hoping you'll join us by doing a similar event on your campus. Below are some resources for organizing your own sit-in.
Understand what you want to do! We are doing silent protests while holding posters, so try to stick to that idea!
Get any permits you may need! Do this by checking your university's website or contacting a local police department.
Spread the word! Use group chats, talk to teachers, put up signs, and more to let people know what is happening, when it is happening, and where it is happening!
Get the media involved! Contact your school/city newspaper and local news channels to see if they will cover your protest.
AND MOST IMPORTANTLY: ensure that you and all participants stay safe! Use a buddy system, do not engage with counter-protesters, and stay in public areas! If you want more info/tips around this, try contacting a local activist group to see what they do to stay safe.
Here, you'll find ideas for poster designs and slogans to use at the protest. The links below are to downloadable PDFs if you would simply like to print these posters, or they can also serve as inspiration for creating your own!
