St.Joan of Arc

Joan of Arc also known as the Maid of Orleans was ordained as saint of France and a heroine. Joan was born in 1412 , she was famous for her bravery because at a very young age, she led French troop in the Hundred Years war which was between the English and French. Joan of Arc was a simple girl living in a farm but she was blessed with special power , at the age of 12 she started to hear voices from angels and saints. The voices told her that she has a mission to free her country from the English invasion. With this, she dressed like a man, picked up her arms, and led the battle. Joan became very famous because of her valor. Although she is a woman, she took courage to fight for her freedom.


St.Catherine of Laboure

Saint Catherine was born on May 2, 1806 in a quaint village in Burgundy France. She was the ninth of eleven children. At the age of nine, her mother died, and in her sorrow, St Catherine turned to the only mother she knew ,blessed Virgin Mary. At the age of 23, she joined the Daughters of Charity, a religious order of Sisters that St. Vincent de Paul founded. In 1830 Mary told St Catherine to have the Miraculous medal made. Right before her death, St Catherine told her superior that she was the Sister of the Miraculous Medal, On December 31, 1876, St. Catherine passed away, her body was exhumed 57 years later. St. Catherine was canonized by Pope Pius XII on July 27, 1947. Her feast day is November 28, she was declared a saint because of the heroic virtues she lived while doing her unusual duties , now everyone knows her as the Saint who had seen and touched the Virgin Mary.


St. Peter Chanel

Saint Peter Chanel was born in 1803 Belley, France and his goal was to become a missionary priest and save people. In 1817, St. Peter later won rewards for Christian doctrine and speech in the minor seminary at Meximieux. He was ordained on July 15, 1827 and became an assistant priest for a short time. He was respected by the people in the his area and then in 1831, Peter joined the Society of Mary. St. Peter wanted to focus on missionary work but then the Marists placed him as a spiritual director for five years. In 1836, he was accepted to do his missionary work which was to send missionaries to the southwest Pacific. For years he's been working with people in islands and sharing the Gospel. His last destination was in Futuna and he arrived there on November 8, 1837. When Peter arrived there he wanted to learn their language and their ways of living. Futuna has a monarchy and the king thinks that Christianity would weaken his power. After two years of Peter being in Futuna, he has mastered the language and continued to share the gospel. The king's son, wanted to be baptized and the king sent a soldier to find Peter for encouraging people to be baptized. Later that day the soldier found St. Peter, and Peter was clubbed to death on April 28, 1841.

St.Denis of Paris

St Denis of Paris was martyr and a bishop in which is now called Paris, France. Denis was born in the third century and he is the patron saint of the French Monarchy. He was beheaded for his faith by the Roman emperor Decius in Montmartre. On the same minute when Denis was beheaded, he picked up his own head that was cut off, and walked for about four miles around the area of the catholic church, holding his head pointing out he was showing where he wanted to be buried. After walking for a few miles he finally fell down and died completely.

Why is France Known as "The eldest daughter" of the Catholic church?

From the French Revolution the catholic church had been the official state religion of France since the conversion to Christianity of Clovis leading to France being called the eldest daughter of the church. They were also the first of the Germanic tribes to embrace the Catholic Church.
