Strategies for helping students choose topics and develop questions

WWWWWH strategy for developing questions:

One strategy you can use to help students to come up with questions is to use the common question words, Who, What, Where, When, Why, and How. These can help students think of questions to ask about their topic.

This note-taking form engages students in developing questions using the common question words, as well as giving them a place to note their answers: WWWWWH Note-Taking Form

Thick and Thin Questions strategy:

Sometimes students only think of simple questions that are easily answered but don't help them understand a topic deeply. We call these "thin" questions. They can be answered easily. Questions with more complex answers challenge students to dig deeper into a topic and gain a more thorough understanding.

This presentation can be used with students to practice identifying the difference between thick and thin questions: Thick and Thin Questions
