SEED Registration for Fall 2025 has closed!
Columbus and Franklin County Metro Parks
Students Exploring Ecosystem Dynamics (SEED) is a free, 9-week, fifth-grade, project-based learning program aligned with Ohio’s Life Science Standards. Launched in 2000 as a collaboration between Columbus City Schools and Metro Parks, SEED connects students with their community through inquiry-based activities that build scientific understanding, creativity, critical thinking, communication, and collaboration.
After a pause due to COVID, SEED is restarting with a revised format, serving fewer schools while maintaining a robust learning experience. Funded by Metro Parks, the program is free to registered Franklin County SEED schools, with some districts receiving transportation support.

At the time of your school's registration into the SEED program, your school will be asked to identify one Contact Teacher to be the communication/scheduling liaison between Metro Parks Education Administrator and school administration and staff. This teacher should be proficient at email, organization and communication as they will be responsible for confirming student numbers, ordering various components for SEED, organizing pick up of supplies, communicating to staff, scheduling and logistics for In-Class visit and the SEED Field Trip etc.
Metro Parks SEED program is open to schools within Franklin Co. Ohio and is subject to available space constraints. If you are a Franklin Co. school and would like information about Metro Parks programs and/or registering for the SEED program, please contact Macy Tallarico, mqtallarico@metroparks.net
If you have registered for SEED and have not been contacted by your Park Partner by Sept 9th, please fill out the registration form (link above) and contact mqtallarico@metroparks.net.
We can't wait to see all the 5th grade students again!
The following are changes to the SEED program that have come up in the past 3-5 years:
SEED field trips are staffed by ONE Metro Parks Staff Member
Field trip and In-Class visits are pre-planned through your Park Partner
The SEED Expo is taking a break for the time being
SEED Program does not include SEED Supply Kits: If your school struggles to supply SEED materials, please contact your Park Partner or email mqtallarico@metroparks.net. In the past, SEED registered schools were given a SEED tote filled with most of the supplies needed to do the 23 teacher-led SEED Activities.
SEED Program does not include the folder that is used as a Student Portfolio / Portfolio Pages: Teachers are advised to provide each SEED student a 3 prong folder to be used as a SEED Portfolio folder. Student Portfolio Pages have been developed for each SEED Activity. By completing the various scenarios and questions on the Portfolio Page, students are able to demonstrate their ability to tie science content and concepts with real-world applications, LA and Math integration. Portfolio pages also supply practice questions and scenarios similar to what might be on the Ohio State Science Assessments.
The Website got an upgrade!! If you notice anything missing and/or would like to see changes made to the website, please reach out to your park partner or mqtallarico@metroparks.net
