Portugal is located in southwestern Europe. Portugal is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean, and Spain to the north and east.
Portugal is a predominantly Roman Catholic country with a close-knit family ethic. Its rich culture results from many influences, including Celtic, Lusitanian, Phoenician, Germanic, Visigoth, Viking, Sephardic Jewish, and Moorish.
Fado music is a form of Portuguese singing that is associated with pubs, cafes and restaurants. This music genre officially originated in Portugal around the 1820’s.
Football is the most popular sport in Portugal. The country has produced some of the most well known footballers like Eusébio, Luís Figo and Cristiano Ronaldo.
Some types of traditional dances in Portugal are the Vira, Chula, Corridinho, Malhão and Fandango.
On March 28 1986, the Prime Minister of the first constitutional government, Mario Soares formally submitted Portugal's application for accession to the European Community. Ten years later on January 1997, Portugal formally became a member of the EU.
