This workshop had to be arranged virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent governmental and sectoral restrictions. The intensive 5-day online workshop included:
1. A lecture on introduction to database design:
a) Organizing data into tables,
b) Recognizing the need to split up data into tables and defining relations between them,
c) Working with redundant data and dividing them into tables.
Assessment tasks:
a) Define the necessary data required for building a weather station system,
b) Report collecting data from several weather stations (temperature, humidity) into a centralized database.
2. A lecture on introduction to programming basics:
a) Deciding which control structure (sequence, selection, iteration) to use for performing basic programming tasks in a graphical environment,
b) Using C# to connect to remote Web APIs for requesting data,
c) Working with our project website https://iot-erasmus.azurewebsites.net to query information about uploaded snapshots with C#.
Assessment tasks:
a) Get access to your user token to update the description of taken snapshots on our project website.
3. A lecture on introduction to Raspberry Pi systems:
a) Setup a Raspberry minicomputer,
b) Downloading and installing necessary libraries for reading DHT11 sensors and writing text to LCDs,
c) Working with a Raspberry Pi and doing the wiring for the DHT11 sensor and LCD,
d) Working with Python to communicate with connected devices.
Assessment tasks:
a) Read the temperature and humidity of the DHT11 sensor and display it on the LCD.
The workshop participants were 5 pupils from each partner school (MSŠ, AVGS, BHAK-HBLW, LYCEE GAY LUSSAC) and 2 accompanying persons. We had to relocate the organization several times due to COVID restrictions. In the end, the activity had to take place online. It took place immediately after the end of the lockdown in Austria. Austrian students and teachers had returned to school. However, there was also a strict ban on extracurricular visits.
Contrary to the plan from the project application, we could not provide one day of professional training in a specialized company focusing on the presentation of the company's data management and visit in production. Anyway, this was the only difference, and the quality of the online workshop didn't suffer any damage. Teachers and students from Austria led this online student workshop from Monday, 24th January 2022, to Friday, 28th January 2022. The sessions took the form of an online conference (Google Meet) with chat and the use of the Discord platform for working on simultaneous tasks. The program ran from Monday to Thursday from 8:30 to 14:00; we ended with student presentations at 12:30 on Friday.
There are several results and outputs:
1. Short videos about the preparation for the training activity shot by participants from each partner school.
2. Project database map – created in Azure websites for storing photographs
