Macbeth by Shakespeare
In Shakespeare's tragedy, Brave general Macbeth, spurred by witches' prophecies and his wife's ambition, murders King Duncan to seize the throne. Plagued by paranoia and guilt, he descends into tyranny, killing anyone he perceives as a threat. (SPOILER ALERTS!) Lady Macbeth, driven mad by her own guilt, takes her own life. Duncan's sons, Malcolm and Donalbain, raise an army to reclaim the kingdom. The witches' cryptic prophecies mislead Macbeth, ultimately leading to his downfall. Macduff, born by cesarean, fulfills the prophecy and kills Macbeth, restoring Malcolm to the throne.
Like other plays, Macbeth speaks to each generation. Once seen as a story about a hero who commits an evil and pays an enormous price, more recently, it has been applied to nations that overreach themselves and to our sense of modern alienation.
