Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
Dystopian bestseller and film franchise, The Hunger Games is in the first in this powerful series. As the novel opens, we find our characters in the ruins of a place once known as North America, now the nation of Panem, with a "shining" Capitol surrounded by twelve outlying districts. Long ago the 12 districts waged war on the Capitol and were defeated. As part of the surrender terms, each district agreed to send one boy and one girl to appear in an annual televised event called, "The Hunger Games," a fight to the death on live TV. Our protagonist, sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen, lives alone with her mother and younger sister, "Prim." In an effort to save the life of her sister, Katniss sacrifices herself to represent her district in the Games. As the hunger games begin, the terrain and the rules to navigate the deadly arena are unclear, but one thing is sure: each character is fighting to survive and defy the Capitol's oppressive regime -- kill or be killed.
