Building a Schoolwide Culture of Reading Resources

Open Educational Resources (OER)

OER@AVU, an African Virtual University initiative launched in 2011 with at least 288 OERs, has been a great contribution to the African and global OER communities. As of July 2018, OER@AVU has a total of 1,623 resources. This follows the addition of 1,335 new OERs released in 2018 under the Creative Commons license CC BY 2.5. The new resources include 234 modules, 83 videos and 945 learning objects extracted from the modules.

The AVU developed the new set of OERs jointly with 27 partner institutions located in 21 African countries within the framework of Multinational Project II funded by the African Development Bank. All AVU OERs have been developed in Africa and are being accessed in 225 countries and territories worldwide.

The AVU OER repository has 3 communities (English, French and Portuguese) and 4 collections (Teacher Education, Applied Computer Science, Policy Briefs, and articles of AVU’s peer-reviewed open-access journal). The Teacher Education and Computer Science collections have peer-reviewed modules which are full textbooks, and learning objects as well. The subjects in the repository include mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, computer science, informatics, administration, linguistics, teacher education professional courses, and ICT in education

Since its launch in 2011 the AVU OERs portal has been accessed at least 2.8 million times from 225 countries and territories. The AVU has also received 5 international Awards that include the 2017 Open Education Consortium (OEC) Individual Leadership Prize www.oeconsortium.org , the International Council for Distance Education (ICDE) Institutional Prize 2015 www.icde.org and 3 other OEC prizes related to OERs in 2013, 2012 and 2011.

The African Virtual University (AVU) is a Pan African Intergovernmental Organization that was founded in 1997. Its Mission is “to prepare learners, using open distance and eLearning, to better contribute to the development of the African continent through provision of high quality tertiary and continuing education”. AVU has contributed in training 75,092 Learners.
