On this page, you will find a vast array of tools I use to develop a high quality and engaging collection for my students, staff and professional learning network.

Collection Development

A LOT of #Booklove

There are many strategies teacher librarians use to cultivate their personal reading lives and the reading lives of others. The result of these strategies in practice is the development of a dynamic, up-to-date and inclusive library collection.

When asked what my favorite part of being a librarian was, I told the 8th grader that one of the aspects of my job that I loved the most was the chance to get people EXCITED about reading and help students and adults see themselves as readers! One very important way I do this is through collection development. Some of the ways I do this include:

  • Read and listen to books voraciously--see my Goodreads!
  • Subscribe to professional publications such as School Library Journal and School Library Connection to read the latest reviews and be up to date on the starred reviews.
  • Review books for School Library Connection.
  • Keep a blog with some of my reviews and other book related information--Ms. Thom's Bookitis
  • Participate in various webinars sponsored by School Library Journal, ISTE, Booklist, Junior Library Guild, and Edweb--click here for some of my favorites.

Authentic Student Learning: Student Creates Blog for Student Reviews

Check out a book review blog "Page Turner Kids," created by one of the 6th graders at Bristow Middle School! The author, Pseudonymous Bosch, shared it out on his Twitter page.

Suggested Activity: Book Tasting

Tired of students faking reading? Book clubs are a way to engage students in real reading and real conversations. They address the importance of student choice, the power of theme and how teachers can help students see the world through different perspectives.
