About Melaskóli
Out school is a public school located in the heart of Reykjavík, in the area so called "west side".
It is one of the oldest schools in the capital area. It is a primary school starting from 1st grade up to 7th grade (ages 6 to 12). There are total of 10 compulsory grades in Icelandic school system. There are about 600 students in the school and our pupils speak the total of 29 languages, either as a mother tongue or a second language. We have staff consisting of 90 people, 58 of them being teachers.
It is an inclusive school, meaning that we focus on preparing curriculum and focus on creating suitable learning environment for students with different needs. Taking the individual needs into consideration, we work to allow pupils to feel safe and help them develop their unique abilities and skills.
Throughout the years, we have worked on Olweus project and methodology which educates students on how to avoid bullying, allowing them to become responsible individuals.
At the moment we are adapting formative assessment at our school and the school society benefits from that. Our latest addition is "The Unicef Rights' Respecting School". It helps develop pupils’ acceptance of diversity, and provides them with a strong moral compass.
"Vínaliðar - Buddy Team" is a project engaging all students through games and playing during recess. The pupils responsible for the project have a certain role throughout the year, allowing them to develop leadership skills.
Well-being, cooperation, ambition and creativity are the core values of our school.
Our students practice sports two times a week and have swimming lessons throughout the year. We have subjects like music class, art class, carpentry, home economics, sewing and textile class. The former three focus on developing students' creativity and passion through handiwork, so important in todays' tech dominated forms of spending time.
