The Medina NHS is a program with the purpose to create an enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote worthy leadership, and to encourage the development of character in students of Medina High School. Graduating students in the NHS will receive a gold cord to wear during graduation.
Candidates eligible for membership must be members of the junior or senior class.
Candidates must have been enrolled for a period equivalent to one semester (two marking periods) at Medina High School in the Medina Central School District in Medina, New York.
Candidates eligible for membership to the chapter shall have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 90.0 by the second semester of their junior year.
Upon meeting the grade level, enrollment, and GPA standards, candidates shall then be considered based upon their service, leadership, and character.
If a student does not meet the scholastic requirement their junior year, he or she may again be considered for membership in the second semester of his or her senior year.
Members must participate in four chapter service project each year. The Arista Chapter performs four service projects each year. Students that miss a project must make up this with a separate service project.
If an already inducted member falls below any of the requirements, they will receive a notification to warn them. If the issue is not resolved before the specified time, the member will lose their membership.
The Medina NHS organizes and hosts a dinner for all area Veterans and their families. This is normally held within a few days of the holiday, in the Medina Junior/Senior High School cafeteria. This is the NHS major Fall Service Project.
For our Winter Service, NHS partners with MAAC (Medina Area Association of Churches) to give back to the community. NHS Members are required to sign up for a Saturday with one other member, and volunteer at MAAC during a set time that day.
Current NHS members will go around and 'tap' students who are academically eligible for induction. The tapped students can then complete the application to show that they meet the other requirements to be inducted.
All students that have met the requirements and have been accepted by the Faculty Council will attend the official ceremony in the Junior/Senior High School auditorium.
Usually around May, the Junior/Senior High School has a half-day of classes, and students can say for normal second half of the day to participate. Students will sign up to volunteer their time to help out the community in one of many different opportunities. This event is open to all students, not only NHS members. NHS members are required to attend as both a Junior and Senior, as this is their Spring and Summer Service.
NHS members will give incoming 7th Graders (current 6th graders) a tour of the school as they prepare to transition from Wise Intermediate to the Junior/Senior High School.
