Students with anxiety disorders may be eligible under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) for a 504 Plan or IEP. The broader category of emotional disurbances is described in section 300.8 (c)(4)
It is important to remember that teachers are not responsible for diagnosing students with anxiety, other emotional disturbances, or disabilities, but recognizing the symptoms and making sure we are aware of coping strategies, resources, and how to best serve students with anxiety is part of a supportive classroom structure.
MTSS (Multi-Tiered System of Supports) is an example of a tiered system of support that many states use in order to support students' needs (behavoral, emotional, and acedemic) in the classroom.
RTI (Response to Intervention) is another, similar program that aims to support all students and intereve where specific accomodations are necessary.
