The course begins with basic knowledge of anatomy and physiology, first aid, CPR, data collection, and safety practices and ends with a thorough understanding of medical emergencies. The course presents the tools for students to understand the importance of pre-hospital care and delivers a thorough understanding of the proper use of medical equipment necessary to provide appropriate care. The competencies in this course are aligned with the National Standard Curriculum, Common Core State Standards, and the California Career Technical Education Model Curriculum Standards. There is also an emphasis on college and career readiness skills such as teamwork, effective communication, professionalism, and medical ethics.

The course focuses on analysis of medical terms by body systems incorporating structure, body systems, and basic anatomy, physiology, and the disease process. Emphasis is placed on spelling, usage and pronunciation of medical terms and also on a basic understanding of body systems with an emphasis on the pathophysiology of the disease.
