Individual counseling sessions are for students who would like, or who would benefit from, individual attention. Individual school counseling is typically short-term and runs for approximately 6-8 weeks. Topics discussed may include whatever the child is experiencing and needs support with, including (but not limited to): trouble with friends, trouble at home, stress, anxiety, grief, depression, gender issues, etc.
Sessions usually start with an explanation of why the child is there, an explanation of what counseling is and what the child can expect, a discussion about what the child wants to work on, and a rapport building activity. Once rapport is established, future counseling sessions focus on creating goals and learning skills and strategies to help the child achieve those goals.
My goal is to create a safe and predictable space where the child feels understood, valued, and supported.
Anything discussed in counseling sessions is confidential, except in instances where I am concerned the child may hurt themselves, hurt someone else, or someone may be hurting them. I am a mandated reporter and required to notify Children and Family Services if I believe a child may be in danger.
If more support is needed, I am happy to provide resources for outside counseling support.
